Design and manufacture controls for a machine to quickly and precisely feed predetermined lengths of stock from coils of material into punch presses. The system also monitors the stock thickness as it feeds. The control coordinates the operation of several multi-horsepower motors, to accelerate and decelerate the material without damage to surface finish, or pre-applied coatings. We designed an easy to use operator interface for programming and operating the machine, and an integrated PLC for related automation. A local area network for downloading setup information and uploading process data made the system very easy to use for the operator, and provided useful quality control. This application required high speed, and high precision, in a hostile environment.
