Giddy Up for Wish's main priority is safety - for the horses, vehicles, road crew, Martha and anyone else involved. Therefore Martha has decided that she will be wearing a certified riding helmet whenever she is in the saddle. Helmets have not been a part of western riding attire in the past, though it is gaining in popularity amongst western riders, even in the rodeo world. With all of the media coverage that this ride is getting, we hope that by Martha wearing a helmet, Giddy Up for Wishes will be able to promote the importance of wearing a riding helmet - for people of all ages and all riding disciplines.
We have had a lot of enthusiastic riders wanting to ride with Martha for a part of her journey. Unfortunately we have to discourage this due to the following reasons;
Speed – Martha has daily deadlines that she needs to meet to accommodate hosts, community events and her arrival in Calgary. This means that she will be traveling at a trot or lope for the majority of her time in the saddle.
Safety and concern for horses – As any horse person knows, when a horse is introduced to a new setting or new horses, their level of excitement or stress is magnified. Martha cannot take the chance of having one of her horses kicked or bitten. As well, even though Martha’s team of horses will be inoculated for equine diseases, she does not want to risk subjecting them to an illness.
Accommodations/Transportation – Martha has accommodations, transportation and feed for herself, her support staff and her horses. She is not able to accommodate any extras.
Location – The majority of the ride will take place in the ditch, along the Trans Canada Highway. Martha’s horses have been trained and conditioned for the sounds, smells, and noises of a busy freeway. Having a horse accompany her that is not used to these elements opens the door for risks that Giddy Up for Wishes is not willing to take.
Insurance - Martha’s insurance and liability coverage is for her, her support staff and her horses. It does not cover any person or animal outside of the Giddy Up for Wishes team.
