Amber was diagnosed with a brain tumor at a young age. Thankfully, the medullablastoma was treated successfully, but not before it caused blindness. Amber does not let the challenges associated with her visual impairment get in the way of living life to the fullest. One of her passions has always been working with horses. She had never owned one for herself until the Children’s Wish Foundation was able to provide one. As one might expect, Nixy and Amber have formed a very special bond. Together they make a great team.

Amber’s experience inspired her to write a poem to capture her thoughts. It is entitled: Horse Happiness.

A girl became blind at the age of nine,
And took lots of bizarre courses,
Unknown to her, this would soon stop and change,
When she found interest in horses.

Her mom thought hard about this decision,
And tried to find a riding coach,
She knew that this hobby would be a dare,
To this she was sure to approach.

Secretly her mom started searching for,
The horse that was a mystery,
And searched just as far as Arizona,
For this horse he'd make history.

She stumbled across a horse in Devon,
And his name was Nixy, Bold Smile,
And fought for the price that would satisfy,
This agreement took a long while.

But still they put this horse through complete checks,
And took him to the Devon vet,
He came up lame, this was surely a shame,
But they were not done, not quite yet.

They switched to the vet in Wetaskiwin,
To see if this was really true,
And found out that this all was false and wrong,
This time's news appealed to their view.

They threw ghastly prices back and forth to,
Receive this Miraculous horse,
When she said "no deal" we thought it was done,
Her mom was heart-broken, of course.
One day she received a pleasing phone call,
That said to give another shot,
Her mom went back to Devon once again,
This time the right price, her mom got.

They brought him to the stables in Drayton,
The girl still not having a clue,
And when they bestowed this horse to the girl,
Happiness would come, they all knew.

Then one Monday, February thirteenth,
Of the year two thousand and six,
She came to the barn not having a clue,
That the horse that she'd ride, was Nix'.

Her mom said to her "come check the saddle,
For I don't know if it's done right",
When she went to check the saddle and tac,
And she found not quite right, his height.

She asked her mom if this was the same horse,
Then her mom handed her a note,
She read it aloud to everyone there,
Then cried enough to float a boat.

Of course her tears were for her happiness,
And she was filled with joy and glee,
Then she understood how much joy she'd have,
And she realized she was free.
