March 30, 2008 - Got to the Nepean Sportsplex at 8:30 a.m. Fairly brisk weather held a lot of people back from coming out to see us, the wish for World Peace, the individual wishes and the release of the balloons. CTV News as well as several radio stations were there to film and interview me.

I decided to ride Coco today due to all the busy activity. I rode my way to 5 year old Erica who has already received her wish. She gave me her wish with a picture of her Disney cruise and a wish for World Peace. What a sweet little girl. Coco headed out of the parking lot rather quickly. I had to turn back to ride with the RCMP musical ride escorts. I was so grateful to have them there. I was then escorted by 2 Ottawa police officers - Constables Craig Roberts and Kevin McKale. They took us all the way to Antrim on the 417 highway. Can't thank them enough. They took great care of us.

The trip was actually 60 km long and I trotted the whole way. I switched with Coco after 25 km and Daisy did the remaining 35 km. We got it done in 5 hours and 15 mintues. Had a flat tire on the RV. Got that fixed and carried on. We got a few donations from people along the way as well. Lots of people honking horns and I was happy the horses were okay with that.

I'm pooped - going to bed early and happy that I have the first day behind me.

Pulled into Pinto Valley Ranch for the night. Ernie Smith, the owner is such an interesting guy. I could listen to his sotries all night long. One of the most interesting men I've ever met.

March 31, 2008 - Woke up at 4:00 a.m to freezing rain, then snow and then rain. Another great visit with Ernie this a.m. What a neat guy!! Had rain all day, but it was beautiful riding in the rain. Rapper was so good today, talked a lot to the other horses in the trailer but trotted all they way. A wonderful OPP officer, named 'Dave', helped us out today and offered to alert his detachment about our location tomorrow and the times that we will be on the road. One of the Constables from the Ottawa Police Dept. that escorted us yesterday called while I was riding and spoke with Hannah, and wanted to know how I was doing and just checking up. I think that was so nice, these police officers sure are wonderful. Got to Renfrew and are staying at Alder Creek Farm. What great hosts Pat and Ken Forrest are, their place is so warm and inviting. We had a wonderful supper prepared for us. Sandy is so great, my calves are so very sore today and she massaged them for me this a.m. I'm sure happy to have Ron and the kids here, they're all helping out so much. Each time I get off my horse I get looks from all the crew, Garry, Sandy, Ron, John, Bruce and Hannah, and they have such big smiles and they seem proud. That's really cute. Lona flew home today, I'm glad she's there to keep things rolling with the website, but I sure miss having her here. Looking forward to making a mile tomorrow... Even though it'll be in the rain.

April 2008

April 1, 2008 - Had a good start this a.m. It rained hard all night and still raining this a.m. Ken and Pat Forrest served up a terrific breakfast for us all and we were on the road and saddled up at 10:30. Wow I am so impressed with Champagne, she was amazing. She's like driving a Cadillac and has such a good sensible mind. She sure would have made a good buy for someone with the online auction, but I think that I am going to take her off the auction she's just too nice, I'm going to keep her......April Fool's. Well sort of, I am so impressed with her but the plan will be to auction her off. The buyer will have themselves a beautiful horse. I was supposed to ride to Cobden today, but the day turned out to be so beautiful that I thought I'd take advantage of it and switch to Coco at Cobden and carry on to Pembroke. It's great, got two days in one. That's good because the temperature is dropping rapidly and we're expecting snow tonight. Corporal Lorry from the army base in Petawawa met us at the Irving Gas Station and had a section pyloned off for our units. We had some great people meet us there and give us donations. Then we met Julie Yates, who took us to our overnight stay at Louise Johnson's farm, Greenwood Farms. They provided us with food donated by the local grocery store, Riverside Market, owned by Moncion's. Julie worked hard to gather donations today and presented them to me this evening. Louise has a great setup here and such a great hostess. Ontario is full of great people!!

April 2, 2008 - Another great start to the day, the temperature was -3 today, great for riding. A great breakfast prepared by Julie Yates at Greenwood Stables(Louise had an appointment very early this a.m.). Julie and I went into town to do some banking and then she took me to the Tanglewood Tack where I met the owners Loralei and Rick. What beautiful people they are. They donated an excellent item for our homecoming auction. LoraLei is originally from Calgary, she sure has a great inventory. Pembroke is such a beautiful town with incredible history. Such beautiful red brick homes and buildings. This is definitely a great place. I was born in southern Ontario and know of all the great people there, and I'm now seeing how great the northern population is. Julie arranged to have the local paper come out and do an interview at 11:00 a.m. That went well and then I was on Daisy at 12:00 and rode 50 kms to Chalk River. Daisy was amazing, she trotted nonstop for 4 hours. I'm sooooo pleased with these horses. I rode through Petawawa and really felt for all of our Canadian Soldiers. I know that Corporal Lori Clairmont is going to Afghanistan as is her husband, I just wish them all the best and a safe return. I felt great appreciation for our soldiers as I was riding through Petawawa where their base is. I also am impressed with the traffic especially the truckers, they were very considerate today. When I got back Julie was cooking supper for us. We had a great visit, some friends came over and the conversations (and shower) was wonderful. I saddled up Rapper for John and Bruce to ride and Bruce and Rapper gave us a little rodeo entertainment. Lots of laughs, even from Bruce. It feels good to be staying at the same place for 2 days in a row. Off to Mackey tomorrow.

April 3, 2008 - Had an interview with the local Pembroke paper in the a.m. and then left Greenwood Stables. Louise and her daughter and Julie Yates were such great hosts.

We headed to Irving Truck Stop where they treated us to a fabulous breakfast. We then headed for Mackey to mount and start the ride, but on the way we were asked to meet a reporter from the Petawawa Post and get some pictures at the army base. I got on Rapper at 1:00 and rode to Mackey in 4 hours, trotting the whole way. Chalk River and Deep River is full of great people. When we approached Deep River we had people coming out of their houses to meet us and their dogs as well. One guy even welcomed us with his banjo on his porch. Another lady came running out of the Pharmasave with a heating pad for 'the Rider' and a bag of money that she collected from her staff.

We spent the night in Chalk River and were invited to the Lions' bingo for the evening. After John witnessed Bruce's rodeo he grabbed a dauber and decided to stick to the safe sport of 'Bingo'. Sandy came close to winning a few times, but there was always another female voice yelling 'Bingo' I thought that Sandy was going to start a cat fight. Haha Then Don Tooley, from the Lions Club, invited me to the front to speak about Giddy Up For Wishes, and then presented me with a cheque from his club. What a great group of Lions and a wonderful population of people in these small towns. We spent the night in the Lions Hall parking lot and left the horses across the road at Shamrock Stables, with Tracy, Tristan and Tannis. Again, very nice people. Off to Deux Rivieres tomorrow.

April 4, 2008 - Did an interview at the Lion's Hall with the Chalk River/Deep River paper. The reporter is also the Mayor, (I love these towns). I rode Champagne today from Mackey to half way to Deux Rivieres and then switched out with Coco. There were a lot of hills and too much for one horse. There were a couple more people tracking us on the road and caught up to us and gave us donations. I finished the ride at 4:00 p.m. in Deux Rivieres and then drove back to Mackey to stay at Bill Donnelly's place. I sure wish that my family could experience Canada the way that I am, but I guess through this journal, more people can feel like they're here. One more day and then a day off. I'm kinda looking forward to it, all that trotting is giving me a good workout. I'm really enjoying having Ronny, John, Bruce and Hannah here with Garry, Sandy and I. I seldom get to spend this much time with my brother and his kids (just missing Heather), I'll miss them when they're gone on Sunday. We have such a good system going here, everyone works so well together and Sandy is a great cook, as well as many other titles that she holds. Off to Mattawa tomorrow and then a day off!!

April 5, 2008 - Had a brief morning visit with Bill and then off we went to continue the trip from Deux Rivieres to Mattawa. Daisy and I started at 11:00 and finished at 2:00. She was moving out at about 16kms/hr. Tough to slow her down. The shoulders are nice and soft and all the horses are doing great. More donations along the route, it's great. John and Bruce went up ahead and dropped off some flyers in some of the stores in Mattawa so that people are aware when before we get there and perhaps some donations can be filled out prior to our arrival. It was a beautiful day, approx 12 degrees. We arrived at Bob and Diane Corriveau's farm. Such a beautiful, picturesque farm, something that you'd see in a magazine. A great place to have a day off. We all sat outside for a couple of hours and relaxed, while John, Bruce and Hannah had me laughing so hard. I'm sure gonna miss them when they go, they're so nice to have around. Diane cooked us a phenomenal supper and offered showers and laundry. I found out that my cousin Vera and her husband Rick, moved to Mattawa and happen to be good friends with Bob and Diane, so they came over and visited last night. That was sooo nice to spend that time. Off to bed and looking forward to my first day off.

April 6, 2008 - Got up early on this day off (just used to it I guess). Ronny and the kids left at 9:30. I sure hated to see them go, but they will be back to take us in to Calgary at the end. The weather was so beautiful today and this was a great place to spend a day off. We got all the tack oiled and cleaned and dried out the pads and blankets. I'm sure thankful to Rafter Six Ranch who donated the excellent saddle pads, blankets, bridles, reins and other tack. Also, 5 really great slickers, that will come in handy on Wednesday, as they are calling for rain. The Mattawa Lions Club had us for a great dinner at their hall, which sits beautifully on the Ottawa River, what a view, and presented us with a donation. A great day off, I feel rested. Tomorrow we're off to Bonfield!

*** Insert from Ronnie, Martha's brother: 'Just wanted to let you know that Martha's nickname is now Annie, as in Annie Oakley. Bill Donnelly told her she reminded him of Annie Oakley with her long braids and cowboy hat.' Little did he know that Martha's character in the Women of the Wild West (a parade group she belongs to) is Annie Oakley!)

April 7, 2008 - Left Bob and Diane Corriveau's, Freedom Acres farm at 1030 hrs. Such incredible people, it's interesting how quickly people can become friends in just a short time. Diane fell in love with Champagne and I'm sure she'll be placing a bid on her. They just bent over backwards and sent us home with a bag full of maple syrup spread. Delicious! And it can't be found in Alberta. Rode Rapper today and he was a consistent 14 kms. We covered a lot of ground in a short time and he didn't appear to get tired at all. Hmmmmm, Randy, you may have to arm wrestle me to get him back. We were approaching Bonfield early, so we stopped on the side of the road for 45 minutes, as there was media to meet us at the turnoff. We rode in and it was a beautiful reception. A young girl named Kayla, came up to me and gave me a donation. The Deputy Mayor, Bob Duggard, and a Council Member, John Houle were also there, media, some Lions members and John Wilson who met me on horseback to lead me into the Tall Trees Curlys Farm where we will spend the next 2 days. We had a nice ride in (2 kms..first time Rapper walked) into the farm. Bruce and Marlene Tilson met us at the farm. Great people with some incredible Curly horses. Got settled in and then were invited to the Lions Den for a potluck dinner. We had a wonderful welcome there. I was met at the door by Margo who pinned a corsage on me. That was sooooo nice. The meal was absolutely delicious and what a great group of people. These Lions Clubs and their members have so much fun. I love how everyone gets fined for anything and the money gets put in a jar. At the end of the 'charges' they opened the jar and donated the money to Giddy Up For Wishes. John and Bob, the Bonfield Council members, gave a donation on behalf of the Town as well as everyone approached us with their own personal donations. I learned that Bonfield is one of the places that has the most horses per capita, also learned that the first spike in the Trans Continental railway was driven here, also a 68 pound Muskie was taken out of Lake Nosbonsing which is right here. I have been given Lions pins along the way, that I've put on my vest, I'll be the envy of all the Lions when I get back home. Del, I'll have a few for you as well. This place is very beautiful and full of such welcoming people and good cooks!!

April 8, 2008 - Woke up to an incredible gourmet breakfast at the Tilsons. We then got ready and headed out early for the ride to North Bay as there is an open house planned here from 1 - 4:00 p.m. Coco did great. A couple, anticipating our arrival, were standing at the end of their driveway with a pail of fresh water for the horse. So nice. A van pulled up on the road while we were taking a wee break at a gas station and it was a woman and a man with 2 small children, who asked if they could see the horse. They opened the side door and the 2 year old just giggled as she patted Coco's nose. Coco loved it and kept her nose right in that van. When I got back to the computer, there was an email from the couple stating that they were the foster parents to these two wee ones and that they didn't' know what we were even about till they pulled away. They thanked us for making their little girl's day and said she just said 'horsey' all the way home. This little girl has health challenges and has had several surgeries with another in the near future. They were touched by Giddy Up For Wishes. We got back to the Tilson Curly Farm at 12:30 at the end of the ride and met people, many Lions, at 1:00. Received some more donations and had some great visits. John Wilson, worked very hard and made arrangements for us to set up at the Northgate Mall in North Bay, will have all the media out, as well as the Mayor and then a police escort out of the city. He's a great PR person. Between him and Karen Whittle they have everything under control. Another Lion member named Polly from Sudbury is also working her magic in that area. It's really building. There was a great article in the North Bay Nugget on the front page with a picture of when I rode into Bonfield yesterday. The media is so great with this project. Hung out in the sun with the horses this afternoon and spent time grooming mine and learning about the Curly breed. Very interesting breed that I think I'll look into more at a later date. Had another unbelievable supper prepared by the wonderful cook, Marlene Tilson. If you've ever had her cooking, you'll never forget it. Deb and Marva were worried that I wouldn't have the 'extra' weight on me that they felt was necessary for this ride. Don't worry girls, the way I'm being fed, I'll have to ride more than 3500 kms to wear it off. I'm so pleased with the horses and I give thanks to Sarah and Deb for the help they gave me in getting them used to all kinds of traffic, construction, noodle neck Llama, etc. Heading to bed, I'm sure tired, will have a busy day at the First Spike gas station at 1100 hrs and then off to Northgate Mall. Lots to do before I even get in the saddle to head for Meadowside/Warren.

April 9, 2008 - Woke up to pouring rain this a.m. Loaded up the horses to keep them dry and then had another incredible breakfast with Bruce and Marlene. I stay here much longer and I won't be able to mount my horse for all the extra weight from Marlene's cooking. We headed to The First Spike Gas/Coffee Bar in Bonfield and had an amazing reception there. The staff there had a jar and donated all the $ from their morning coffee to us. They sure get a lot of people, cuz the jar was full. We had a lot of people meet us there and give more donations. They gave me a First Spike T-shirt. It's a good thing that Bonfield isn't any bigger than it is, because the small population that is there is so powerful, If they were a nation, they'd have the power to take over the world. Very helpful, energetic and giving people! I shall never forget Bonfield! What a great place. Oh, adding to the history here, I learned that there are a few escaped black panthers in the area, one was seen by John Wilson, while chasing a rabbit for his supper (not John, the panther). Haha Left the gas bar at 1200 hrs and headed to the Northgate Square in North Bay. We were met, in the rain by some donators, a lot of media and Mayor Vic. We then had a police escort down Main St. and out of the city to Hwy 17. The start was a late one so we didn't quite make it to Sturgeon Falls (about 6 kms east, will pick up there tomorrow). We then went to our overnight stay at Chuck Lochton's place. Chuck is a retired Veterinarian. When I unloaded the horses he looked at their feet and commented that the shoeing job was a really good one, compliments to David Blouin, my great Farrier! Had a little visit and then we were off to one of the Lions' home. Lion Earl Graham and Lion Thelma Porter. Lion Norm, who reminded me a lot of my dad...fun guy, did a lot of work organizing this in a short amount of time. We were presented with a very generous donation and then had a great night of pizza and jokes. Earl is an incredible stain glass window artist. Amazing work and he sent me home with some beautiful pieces. When we got back to Chuck's place we had a visit and I learned that Chuck was born and raised around the Nanton, Alberta area. He also informed me that he is the Pasture Manager at Indian Graves in Alberta. Lona and I ride there and love it. I will definitely be joining him for a few rides out there. If there is any regret that I have so far, it is not being able to spend enough time visiting with Chuck, a very interesting man. I would have loved to meet his wife, but she was out of town and also his daughter who was on the National Jumping Team and traveled the world. Our paths will cross again, I'm sure.

April 10, 2008 - Had a great breakfast with Chuck and then he headed off to work. Got the day organized with phone calls and then headed out to Sturgeon Falls to pick up where we left off yesterday. I started with Rapper and finished with Daisy. There were several stops along the way as there were a lot of people stopping to talk. A school bus drove by with some high school students and a few of them yelled 'I support You' and another yelled 'You go Girl'. This brought a tear to my eye. It's wonderful to have this support from teenagers. I'm glad that they are supportive. There were 3 children(Andy, Hope and Scott) and their mom (Ann), standing on the side of the road with a bag of apples for the horses. Scott told me that I am living his dream. He just bought a quarter horse 5 months ago and I encouraged him to keep riding and told him the importance of a riding helmet and if he kept it up, perhaps
he would be the next 'Giddy Up For Wishes Rider'. We had a stop at Western Dream Tack Store in Verner. Brigitte has a beautiful western store - Western Dream and the nicest leather vest that I've ever seen is there, just not my size. Her and Mark donated 6 bags of shavings for the horse trailer, very generous of them.

Update on the horses. Champagne is sad these days ever since she departed from her handsome, Curly horse stallion named Rogue, whom she fell in love with for 2 days. I let her know that there are more fish in the sea (horses in the field). First loves are always hard. Now Rapper, he is the most curious horse ever. He has to look around and check out everything in a very inquisitive way. He loves the attention he gets from people and the attention that he was getting from a very curious goat that met him nose to nose. Coco seems rather bored with all this traveling, been there done that, she seems to say, but is such a good trusty horse and loves children.
Now Daisy, well she's just in heaven. I think she quite loves being away from home and exploring every new place that takes her in. She's always running around kicking up her heels. She witnessed her first train today, (the track ran right beside the road, very close). She did pretty good, but it was a bit much for her near the last few cars so a dismount was initiated as two-stepping on the highway wasn't appealing to me. Off to Warren school in the a.m. to do a presentation.

April 11, 2008 - Today was a 'no ride' day as Sudbury area had a winter storm. I don't mind riding in any weather, but the roads were not safe. We had ice pellets and snow, causing very hazardous driving conditions. I was still a day ahead of schedule so I'm on schedule now. We left early this morning to do a presentation at the Warren school. There were 15 students aged 5-8 years. It was a very special time, the kids were very interested in Giddy Up For Wishes. They all handed in a wish to me, so very cute. We then carried on to Sudbury City Hall, with an escort by Constable Dann Kingsley from the Sudbury City Police, for a press conference arranged by Lion Polly from the Sudbury Suomi Lions Club. I get emotional everytime I think of today. I am so moved by what they did. The RCMP were there, OPP and the City Police, a canine unit as well as a fire truck manned by a full platoon with Platoon Chief, Danny Stack, who gave me a t-shirt, sweatshirt and a ball cap (2 for Sandy and Garry as well). The Deputy Mayor of Greater Sudbury made an incredible speech and then presented me with a gift as well as a Proclamation by the Mayor, John Rodriquez. This reads that he has proclaimed the week of April 11-17, 2008 to be 'Giddy Up For Wishes' week in the City of Greater Sudbury. I am sooooooo moved, what an honor. There was a lot of media there also. There was supposed to be 43 students from the Alexander Public School that were very eager to come, but due to the weather they were unable, so little 8 year old Emily was the representative for all the children (her friend Haley was the original representative, but couldn't make it). She presented me with a booklet that was made by all the students called 'Together We Can Make The World a Better Place!' This book holds all the written, artistic, wishes of the children on how they think they can make the world a better place. What a treasure!! She hugged me when she left and said 'I'm sure gonna miss ya', her brother, Hunter, accompanied her as well for this special time. There were two young brothers there Jordan and Zack Primeau. Jordan has nearly lost his eyesight to his illness and has just recently got his wish, and that was to meet the Toronto Maple Leafs. He gave me his wish written in pen and in Braille that he and his friends will beat cancer. Another little 2 year old angel named Olivia Catarina Moreira, who has Retinoblastoma, has a wish that she will beat cancer and be able to keep her eyesight. All dressed in pink she had me hold her many times, especially to see the horses. When I was at the podium to speak she ran up with arms opened for me to pick her up and she wrapped her little arms around my neck. How precious! We also had a pediatric nurse who spoke and brought all to tears. She works with the Children's Wish Foundation to help deliver wishes and she said that many parents tell her that if not for the wishes, these children would not make it like they do. I know what I'm doing will make a difference for so many. It's so nice to know that I'm not doing this alone. I'm grateful for all this support. We made a deposit at the bank and everyone in line was talking to us and even got a donation at the Royal Bank from a customer. Sudbury people are sooooo friendly, I look forward to coming back and seeing this place in the summer.

April 12, 2008 - We stayed at the home of Anne Salter and Dave Dorland in Wanup last night. A great riding facility and beautiful, warm inviting home. They cooked a great steak dinner for us and offered great conversations. Anne is the Executive Director for the Sudbury Manitoulin Children's Foundation. Dave works as a Land Man and was the President of the National Reining Association last year. They probably have the nicest quarter horses that I have ever seen. Anne's daughter, Cassie, saddled up her horse and showed us some great riding and reining talent. She then invited me to jump on and spin, what a rush. What a great horse, you really get the feel of a horse underneath you. Sandy then jumped on and did the same. We were lucky to have Anne ride her 2 year old (wow) and Dave ride his beautiful gelding. I think that I'm going to seriously consider looking into this sport when I have more time. Cassie's younger sister, Georgia, is a nice little rider as well. We got up this morning to 6-8 inches of snow, looks like another 'no ride day'. I guess this just cancels out my day off on Monday. Had a great breakfast with Dave and Anne and their children. It's so easy to spend time visiting with these wonderful people. The horse world is full of such great people!

April 13, 2008 - Had a great surprise yesterday. My brother called me to say that he was in Sudbury and wanted directions to where we were staying. He brought my mom and nephew with him. What a nice surprise. We spent the day visiting and then drove to the home of Kevin and Mary Webb where we spent the night. Their daughter Kathryn had her two friends over, Rebecca and Kyla, and they were thrilled to see the horses and all of us. We had a wonderful visit. In the morning, Mary sent us with sandwiches for our lunch. Such and nice gesture. Kathryn emailed to say that she was going to make a presentation to her school to have all the children bring a loonie/toonie to the school for Giddy Up For Wishes. She also said that she was going to approach all the schools in the surrounding area. She also said that they are going to have a garage sale with all the proceeds going to this cause. We left Whitefish in the morning and rode to Espanola. Champagne did so great today. Two ducks and a blue heron flew up right in front of her and she didn’t even blink. What a great horse and oh so smooth. I was so impressed with one of the truckers today. A trucker from Cassidy Trucking out of Pembroke, drove very slow beside us and put his 4 way flashers on to slow the traffic and kept them on for a bit ahead of us. That was very nice of him and we sure appreciated it. Lions Paul and Hester Zahorec from Espanola put on a wonderful event for us. They had a meet and greet at the rec centre. This is an incredible community. We had over 70 people attend and had food and drinks donated as well as a beautiful vest by the Town of Espanola with Mayor Bernie Gagnon and Counsellor, Jim Rose in attendance. The owners, Mr. & Mrs. Jeanno Lalonde of the Giant Tiger store sold clouds, which they obtained from the Children’s Wish Foundation, for $2.00 each and displayed them on their window, helped to raise $500.00. The Espanola Lions worked very hard at raising money through a barbecue and couple of weeks ago and then topped off the donation at $5,000.00. Leone Howard knitted some wool socks and double wool mittens for me, (they’re awesome). Lion Polly Ruttenberg, met us there and gave a wonderful City of Sudbury, nickel souvenir for me. She also spread the word at the convention, Polly is a great go getter. Lion Irene sold a bunch of bandanas and hats and met us and gave us the proceeds from her sales at the convention. Four wonderful wish children met me there. Miranda, Stephanie, Jolene and Christian. I had such a wonderful time and great one on one talks with each of them and their families. These children are truly angelic and I was so very honored to meet them and spend the time. One little girl, said that she didn’t have any money to give me but wanted to give me her favorite marble. My heart skipped a beat and I will always treasure that marble. This was a very emotional day. After meeting more of the great locals, Paul and Hester took us to the Cortina Italian Restaurant that served me one of the best meals I’ve ever had. What a great restaurant, the bill was taken care of by the owners, Greg and Kim McCulloch. When passing through, in the future, I’ll be sure to stop there for another meal. We then, had a couple of motel rooms donated at the Pinewood Motor Inn. The soaking bath was so relaxing and the bed was very comfortable.

April 14, 2008 - Got up and met Lions Paul and Hester who treated us to a delicious breakfast at the Pinewood restaurant. These are two very incredible fundraising gurus. The Lions Club here sure does a lot to make the world a better place, starting in their own backyard. We then went to Massey where they had a Meet and Greet from 10.00 to 12.00. They raised over $400.00 in the parking lot through this time. What a great community. We were pretty excited when we rolled in and saw the sign at the Shell gas station that said in big letters, WELCOME MARTHA BIRKETT AND GIDDY UP FOR WISHES. When we were done meeting with all of these friendly people, we drove back to Espanola to start the day’s ride. When we passed through Massey, the sign read THANK YOU MARTHA BIRKETT HAVE A SAFE JOURNEY. That was so nice. I ended the ride a little early today as Daisy was out of sorts, so I came back to Hughie and Nancy’s place and worked with the horses in the round pen for 2 ˝ hours. That was good. Had a wonderful supper with Hughie, Nancy, Caleb and Kennedy. This is one phenomenal family, I’m blessed to have met them and look forward to seeing them in the future. I know that Nancy will be out to ride in Alberta. I hope to see them all. These two kids are something else…………great kids. Nancy’s mom, dad and aunt came over and we had dessert and lots of laughs around the table. I wish all these people lived in closer proximity to me.

April 15, 2008 - Saw Celeb and Kennedy off before school and then Nancy vet checked the horses and gave them the boosters that they needed, before her and Hughie went off to work. Did some work with Rapper in the round pen before heading off. We had to backtrack from 11 kms east of Massey and then rode to Serpent River (49 kms). Rapper did so well, he did 35kms and Coco did 14. Some ducks flew up in front of him and he just gave a quick look and then carried on. A train went by when I was riding Coco, and then after it passed me by it stopped. Coco did well through it but unfortunately she had to do it all over again, because they appeared to stop to take our picture. So after the Engineers took the pictures the started it up and Coco had to redo it again. She didn't seem to mind at all. We stopped in Serpent River to load up and I had a wonderful surprise. My sister-in-law's father, Jack McKinnon, whom I have know for 35 years and lives in Elliot Lake, pulled up. What a great surprise. He and his friend Barb, joined us in Spanish for supper. So nice to see a familiar face. Diane Kearsey took our horses for the night to her farm. What a beautiful place with spring fed pools filled with goldfish and she had quite a menagerie of birds... peacocks and Australian Black Swans. She joined us for supper at Vance's Motor Inn in Spanish with her twin sister Leighann and her mother (who had 16 kids). We were given rooms for the night at Vance's. The owners, Jim and Tina, also donated a delicious supper for all of us. What a generous group of people Diane did a lot of work for us ahead of time. Roy and Pat Dingman from Elliot Lake were two people that heard about Giddy Up For Wishes on the t.v. and stopped by to meet us. Pat has a nephew from England that was flown over to Canada a few years ago to receive chemo treatment. The wish foundation over in England sent him. He gave her a special 'English Wish Foundation' pin that she cherishes and has beside her bed. She was very emotional about it all and was thankful for Giddy Up For Wishes. 9:30 and we are all zonked.

April 16 - Got up and had a great breakfast at Vance's and was joined by Diane. Did a radio interview from Giant FM from Welland, Ont and another from Moose FM from Sault Ste Marie. Diane had to go home and get her hummer as the truck sunk in the mud with the RV trailer. Well the winch on the hummer couldn't quite do it without the hummer moving so we had to get another truck, a chevy, to anchor the hummer. I think that Corb Lund could write another song about this. I don't think I'll let Garry live this one down. I'm always happy when I get one up on him. Diane let me drive her hummer back to her place to pick up the horses. WOW what a rush. I love the vehicle. We then picked up the horses and headed for a lunch in Blind River that was put on by the Lions. We first at a meet and greet in the town and the reception was beautiful. Some great donations and a cute little wish child named Abby who had one of the cutest giggles I've ever heard. She's still receiving treatment at the age of 5. Her little brother Jake was her best little friend. She kept on hugging him. Abby tells me that her wish is to go to Disneyland and see Ariel. We got an OPP escort from Constable Jim Davis to the Riverside Tavern where the Lions put on a delectable lunch. Ida Kennedy and her sons Kenny and Francis run this tavern for 55 years. I was told that they don't accept tips. They gathered money for Giddy Up For Wishes and will continue doing so for a couple more weeks and then they'll mail it to us. I got a great picture taken with Ida and then she got it developed, had me sign it, and then bought a frame and is displaying it behind the bar. She told me that it will always be there, so when I come back, I can see it. Roy and Pat came and met us and Pat presented me with that special pin from Englands Wish Foundation. What a priceless gift and an amazing honor. I will cherish it forever. I know how much this means to her. I will wear it for her nephew Gary. We then saddled up and rode to Iron Bridge. I used Champagne and then switched to Coco as I didn't want to overdue it with Champagne as she got her shots yesterday. Champagne and I came across a couple of Sandhill Cranes. Beautiful birds. We then backtracked to Algoma Mills to the beautiful log home of Ken and Mary McKenzie. Ken caught Lake Trout at his camp north of here and served it up for supper. Mary baked a beautiful apple pie. It's a good thing that I'm getting some exercise or I'd gain 50 lbs. Great visit with great people.

April 17, 2008 - Had a great breakfast with Kenny and Mary, it seems like Mary and I have a lot in common, I wish I could have spent more time here. They're super people. Mary gave Rapper and Coco their booster shots, as she is a Vet Technician. Early start this morning to ride to Iron Bridge. Finished that and then loaded up Daisy and headed to Bruce Mines where we were invited to a luncheon at the Arthur Henderson Public School. We had a great welcome from the staff and 120 students. They all loved the horses and then we went inside for the lunch which was provided for all of the students and staff. We were presented with many gifts from the Town of Bruce Mines, The School, The Lions Club, etc. I encouraged the students to participate in the 2 free weeks of camp through downloading the pledge forms. Some children told me their wishes and all students were very interested in Giddy Up For Wishes. After the luncheon I was presented with a free hot stone massage at Serenity Spa from Arlene Labelle. That was a definite piece of paradise! Arlene was great and I sunk into a very relaxing world for awhile. We then drove back to Iron Bridge and started a ride, starting with Daisy and ending with Champagne. Daisy has a tough time during her heat cycle, which she is in right now, so we didn't have much of a bonding time through this ride. I switched to Champagne and decided that I may have to bid on her, she's such a sweetheart. We ended at Thessalon and pulled up to Basswood Stables for our overnight stay. Paul & Lisa Nicholson have listed their 100 acre place on the market. If I lived around here, I would definitely be the buyer for it. The price is incredibly cheap for all that is here. Then we were off to the Thessalon United Church for a delicious dinner with the Lions Club. I'm wondering where that bumbleberry tree is as it's fruit made one of the best pies I've ever eaten. President Carl Johnston made a very generous donation for Giddy Up For Wishes on behalf of the Lions Club. Came back and had a visit with Lisa and Paul and then off to bed in the relaxing sound of the light spring rain. Sandy, Garry and I are very excited and looking forward to tommorrow night's stopover at the home of the 'Mantracker'.

April 18, 2008 - Before leaving Paul and Lisa's place this a.m. she took me to her tack store and donated a bunch of needed items for the horses. So generous. They're really nice people. Garry was thrilled with the new belt that he bought from her for a screaming deal. Rode Coco all day today and she was a steady stead all day. I'm so grateful to Rafter Six Ranch for the awesome air ride pads and double wool blankets that they donated. These horses are managing so very well and not in the least bit sore. We stopped in Bruce Mines to see all the children from the school we were at yesterday, standing on the side of the road to bid us a safe trip. What a great group of kids. We then stopped at the Royal Bank to make a deposit and then stopped at 'The Pizza Lady' and she donated ice cream cones to the 3 of us. It felt so summer like .... the water, the sun, the warmth and the ice cream. We had several visitors and donations while we were there. It is really feeling like spring now and there are so many birds of all different kinds. I almost think that Coco was enjoying listening to them and watching them. We carried on the ride and then trailered to our overnight stay at Phil and Kathy's place. They have a great western home, barn and corral setup. Phil worked for the past few years with 'Man Tracker' and will be doing more episodes here in Ontario with him. The Lion's Club of Sault Ste Marie met us at Phil's place and together with Carla, donated a room at the Sleep Inn. Garry and Sandy decided to stay with the horses and the trailers and I headed to the Motel. I look forward to a shower, it was very dusty today. I'm sure thankful for the media. They are really helping promote and truly support Giddy Up For Wishes. They're all so great!

April 19, 2008 - Happy Birthday to Ken. Sorry I'm missing his birthday at home, but I'd like to say that it must have been because of his special day, that I had such an incredible day myself. Last night I went for a bite to eat with Sue who is a friend of my sister Debbie's, it was really nice. Had a great sleep and then got up and headed back to Phil and Kathy Lemieux's place to have an incredible breakfast and then to start the ride. I had Rapper and Champagne (left Daisy and Coco behind as we are staying for another night here) loaded up and ready to go and Kathy and Phil were chatting with us outside. I suggested that Phil come and ride with me on Rapper and it took him about 1.5 seconds to react and then he was off getting his gear and we were off. We rode from Heyden to Batchawana Bay. This was the most beautiful ride and it was wonderful to have someone who knows the country so well, as a 'tour guide'. It was really nice to have the company of someone else and a bonus that he is a great rider. Lots of lies were told between the two of us and lots of laughs. Riding along Lake Superior was so beautiful and I was telling Phil that my dream has always been to run a horse on the beach. A little while later we reached Harmony Beach and he lead the way down to the beach and I fulfilled that dream. The mist was coming off the water and receding ice and it was so magical. I told him that I felt guilty and his reasponse was 'isn't this ride all about wishes, well you're allowed to have them come true too'. Rapper and Champagne drank the 'Superior' water and I dipped my hands in it for the first time. I was raised on Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, but never touched the waters of Lake Superior. We had so many people stop along the route and visit with us as well as donated. We stopped at Chippewa Falls, which is the middle point of Canada and visited with several people there, even some people from Argentina. We had quite a few little ones along the way experience the horses and many giggles came out of their cute little mouths while petting them. Phil was born and raised around the Sault but he felt like he was seeing this part of his country for the first time. It all looks so much more beautiful from the back of the horse at a slower pace. This was certainly a day that will stand out from this trip. The day didn't end here as we returned to the Lemieux residence, we were met by a Reporter from the Sault Star and then Kathy presented a fabulous meal to us all. Boy oh boy can that woman cook. We sat out on the deck and visited with their two children, Brandon and Brittany, this is an easy place to stay (as all of our stops have been), I feel right at home with such great people. We then moved into the living room and watched a couple of taped episodes of 'ManTracker' where Phil was his sidekick. That was great! I look forward to seeing more upcoming episodes that Phil will be doing. Perhaps he could start his own show called 'WomanTracker' cuz that's pretty much what he did today, though the challenge wasn't much, the tracks were either on the side of the road or on the beach. Garry and Sandy head out in the early morning for a few weeks off. I'm sure going to miss them. They are great company and we have such a great routine. I'm truly grateful for the commitment of the two of them. I'll look forward to them coming back. Day off tomorrow YAHOO. The sleep in will be great!

April 20, 2008 - Day off today. Phil took Garry and Sandy to the airport early this a.m. on his way to work. I had a bit of a sleep in and then got up and had Phil and Kathy's blacksmith come out from Sault Ste Marie, Michigan to reshoe Champagne as she has worn out her shoes. John Munnach did a great job and donated his services. What a nice man. He came on short notice from Michigan and then wouldn't even charge me. Sue Notte came to pick me up and took me to my massage appointment that my sister Debbie bought for me. That was heavenly!!! Very thoughtful of Debbie, and much appreciated. Sue then picked me up and we went for lunch. When she gave me a ride back to Phil & Kathy's there were a lot of people there looking at the horses (Champagne in particular), including Kathy's sister, brother and parents. Then the MacDonald family came out to see the horses and bring a donation. Their son Benjamin (7 yrs)was diagnosed with Duchelle's Muscular Dystrophy and has just been granted his wish from The Children's Wish Foundation. Benjamin and his sister Meghan (5 yrs), Mommy and Daddy will be going to Disneyland in December. Phil and Kathy's daughter, Britney took me to TSC to buy some Tiz Whiz for the horses. They gave me a deal on the purchase. When I got back Rosa and Rhonda came over. It was really nice to see them, glad they're here to start another week of riding/driving with me. We started loading up (I couldn't keep Kathy from helping me clean, do laundry and dishes from the trailer). She's such a nice person and so very very helpful. Rosa's brother-in-law, Rick and Phil, helped to fill the R.V. with water and we had difficulty trying to figure out the water. Something's not quite right with the R.V.'s water system. We gave up trying to figure it out and just left for Batchawana Bay to our overnight stay. We arrived at 10:00 p.m., with the guidance of O.P.P. officer Frank Senecal, and set up the R.V. at The Voyageur Lodge, (owners, Frank and Gayle) and set the horses up at Gerald and Jean that own Sunset Shores. Sherry Boston (Owens) came to visit and stayed for awhile. I have not seen her since high school, so we had a lot to catch up on. A busy day off, not much rest.

April 21, 2008 - Big ride today. Had a bit of a sleep in and then packed up the R.V., went in for a coffee with Frank and then headed off to Sunset Shores to pick up the horses. Jean, a former owner and lover of many horses, became evident to us, as when we arrived in the a.m. our horses were well looked after, fed and watered. Jean then looked after us and fed us a wonderful breakfast as we were entertained by her grand daughter, Wendy. Look up Jean for a special orange bowl recipe! Coco started out the ride from Batchawana Bay to Frater. She is such a steady trotter and went 35 kms before I switched her out. Daisy is appearing to be quite road sour so I only used her for 5 kms and then switched to Champagne who finished the hilly trek with ease. We made a stop at the Agawa Native Craft store which opened for the first time this year today. The merchandise in this store is exceptional. I would highly recommend everyone to stop by this store and browse through their incredible, museum like, store. It reminded me of a store in Banff. Rhonda and Rosa did a great job of driving today and the scenery was breathtaking. It was nice to ride with very little traffic. We arrived at our overnight place called Mad Moose Lodge at Trail's End in Montreal River. We walked the horses down to the lake and they all received a bath from Rhonda. She got pretty soaked from bathing them. What a diamond in the rough this place is. Most spectacular views of Lake Superior and was welcomed with a beautiful sunset to eat our stew and homemade bread by. Dale (owner)such a unique person, we could sit and listen to him for hours on end. What a great place with all the cabins and lodge. Dale tells us that this place is up for sale and the price is amazing for all that is here. Rhonda and Rosa were digging into their wallets to see if they had enough, but then decided that they should perhaps talk to their families first. This is a definite piece of paradise. We made a point to leave the windows open of the trailer so that we could hear the water all night long, as we are parked and surrounded by it. The weather is so nice right now, it was really hot today, like a summer day. Off for the two day trek to Wawa tomorrow.

Excerpt from Rhonda and Rosa: We arrived in the Sault Sunday and met up with Martha at the Lemieux's, and had our first experience with the friendly faces and the overwhelming generosity and support that people have in helping Martha raise funds for the children. Once on the road (which getting on the road was an experience in itself making sure we had prepared both trucks, trailers, GPS, maps and of course horses) it took us a couple of miles to get our speed and timing synchronized so we could stay with the horse at steady pace. I (Rhonda) stayed behind Martha and I must say I appreciate what she is gong through for the kids. As I watched her ride I was amazed at her stamina and determination to get to our next destination 50 km down the road. We have done some trail riding ourselves but I must admit this is no TRAIL RIDE, Martha is putting her heart and soul into this ride and thinking about fulfilling the kids wishes keeps her in the saddle day after day.

April 22, 2008 - Woke up to a beautiful morning at Mad Moose Lodge. 50% of the population of Montreal River came over to visit with us and the horses. All 5 people were very nice and generous. Dale has such a wonderful place, I already can't imagine the place without him. Headed north from his place. Rapper is incredible, he trotted the 4 km Montreal River hill and then all the hills after that one. He managed 40 kms before I switched him out. I'm going to have to force these horses to slow down as the terrain here is very challenging. I was warned about the hills and now we're climbing them first hand. Coco did some riding today, but I made her walk most of the way, just a little trotting. There will be a little more time spent in the saddle in a day due to the slower speeds. The scenery is so spectacular, we stopped many times to take pictures. We stopped after crossing the Sand River as it was raging ferociously to the Lake Superior. We decided that a picture was a must so Rosa lead the way while Rhonda carried the camera. Rapper was very concerned about leaving his buddies and heading east instead of west and danced around a lot. We were getting into position for the 'perfect shot' when Rosa alerted us to an oncoming, west bound 18 wheeler. We thought we had better start maneuvering back west when Rhonda screeched at the sight of an oncoming east bound 18 wheeler. Rhonda hid the camera and ran for dear life, while Rosa positioned herself to jump over the railing while Martha galloped with Rapper in tow back to the safety of the ditch where the pictures were then taken in safety underneath the bridge. Rosa still kicks herself for not being ahead of Rapper and I to get a memorable shot of us out running an 18 wheeler. We trailered to Michicipoten to spend the night at the farm of Carol Ann and Jamie Robinson, whom we're sure are related to Rosa and Rhonda (somehow). They had a lovely young family meet us there who had a child that received a trip to Disneyland last summer. The family is friends with the Robinsons and had their daughter ride and spend time with the horses. An emotional time for them reliving the difficulties they experienced, though they mentioned that the days spent in Disneyland left them with beautiful memories that they will never forget. We headed to Ann Lawson and Bob Pinder's home and feasted on an incredible turkey dinner, with some moose meat thrown in for good measure, which was wonderful, as I missed my Easter turkey dinner. Rhonda loves moose meat (she had some and thought it was beef, found out it was moose and screeched 'I hate moose, or so I thought.)! There are very few horse people around here, so Carol Ann and Ann ride a lot together and are the few horsey people in Wawa area. We're grateful for having been connected with them.

April 23, 2008 - Last night was the first night that we spent without power, I didn't bother starting the generator, as we didn't' spend much time in the trailer prior to bedtime. Got up and got an early start today. Carol Ann delivered coffees this morning before we headed off. It was a bit foggy in Michicipoten River Village this a.m. and a little bit of rain, but the weather was great for riding, a little cooler than yesterday, which was good. Passed a couple of dead moose on the side of the road and Coco paid no mind to them. Still quite a few hills and some beautiful scenery around Old Woman River. This is definitely a different type of riding. Not as much trotting, and a little more walking. We need to reserve the energy of the horses in order to get this ride done. I can certainly understand how some people on horseback (one horse) ware them out by Thunder Bay. The traffic with the transport trucks was pretty dicey around the hills today. Rosa and Rhonda did some great driving and they are always on the ball and thinking, which really helped out today. We then had OPP Constable Dave come and meet us to give us an escort. That sure put us at ease. We rode into Wawa and had pictures taken by the 'Goose', by Brenda Grundt who is the reporter/owner of Wawa-News.com. We got to Carol Ann's to put the horses away and we were met by many people and a lot of children. Shirley Mills, reporter for the Sault Star, met us and took some pictures of the children and the horses. Jamie, Carol Ann's husband, showed up with their two children, Lindsey (9) and Brett (7), and was just settling in after quite a fright. He explained to us that he couldn't find the two of them and when they finally came home he was quite upset with them for running off. They sheepishly told Jamie that they were out canvassing for Giddy Up For Wishes. They went door to door with two containers that had notes on them, written in French, asking for donations for the Children's Wish Foundation through Martha Birkett and her horses. They raised $100.00 by doing this. Jamie was overwhelmed by his children's actions as we all were, so moving. Kids helping kids...how beautiful, these kids are great. We went to Bob and Ann's for another great meal and showers and baths. We then headed to Carol Ann's so that I could get internet and phone service. Heading west to White River (2 day trek).

There are a few people that work very hard behind the scenes that I would truly like to recognize. Ann Mallory, Trevor Eagles (Children's Wish Foundation), Lona Louden, Pascal delGuercio, Peggy Hemstock, Delwyn Borrgaard. Thanks to all of them that are keeping Giddy Up For Wishes going by all their work while I'm here. This truly couldn't happen with all of them and all of the help by others. Thanks to all the wonderful people that have been touched by this journey. I know that Canadians will keep giving to help reach the goal so that all these children (so many that I have been touched by) will be helped.

From the bottom of my heart I thank everyone!!

April 24, 2008 - We are parked away from houses, in the trees and this morning I woke up to the sounds of birds singing and it reminded me of home. I'm sure missing home and my family this morning. Lion Nancy from Wawa came with her son and made a generous donation on behalf of the Lions Club. We headed out to the 'Goose' (the landmark of Wawa) where we left off yesterday. Sargeant David Hall and his partner gave us an escort out of town. Very appreciative of their help. Champagne started out with much energy. We figured it took her 35 kms to finally settle in, she is a machine. She's sure in good shape, as all the horses are. The shoulders seemed a bit wider, quite sandy and the traffic was a fair bit less than it has been. A good traveling day. A couple stopped on the side of the road and they were on their way back home to Nanton, Alberta. Leo Coss and Margaret Thiessen were so very supportive of what we're doing, it was great to meet some fellow Albertans. I'll be seein' them at the Stampede, as they enter the prelude to the Calgary Stampede Parade with their miniature horse, Little Chief, and their cart. We arrived at H&C lodge (halfway point to White River) and set up camp for the night in the campground. Henri and Carol Savoie supplied us with water, electricity and a good spot for the horses. The weather was nice so Rosa, Rhonda and I sat out on the picnic table and had our supper. Looking at the truck and horse trailer, I sure am grateful to Cochrane Dodge and Bar T 5 for such a great looking rig. We have received many compliments on the professional presentation of this ride as it is seen heading down the highway. If the ice was off Hammer Lake, Rosa would have been taking a swim. It was a beautiful, relaxing evening. Off to White River tomorrow.

April 25, 2008 - It rained in the night last night but was all cleared off by the time we woke up. I slept really heavy and didn't even hear the rain or the wind. I sure do sleep well, must be all the fresh air and posting that I do. We left H&C Lodge and trailered back to Obatanga Park to pick up where we left off and headed for White River. We were on moose alert all day. It was a bit of a dreary day and the terrain shouted 'moose country'. A lady stopped her vehicle to warn us that there were a couple of moose on the road up ahead and recommended that we try to avoid them. Rapper became very alert, as I think that he was smelling them, and became a little on edge. There were many fresh tracks on the side of the road as well. When we arrived into White River, we headed to St Basil school, escorted by the Fire Dept., and were met by 40 students, teachers, some parents and Lion Norbert LaChante and his wife as well as a local Council member. The students and staff gathered donations and handed them in. We also received another generous donation from the Lions, and then was invited to their hall for coffee. One of the fire fighters was telling me that he saw me in North Bay and then I remembered him. When I was riding downtown North Bay there was a little boy who came running out of a corner store and hollered back, 'Daddy look there's a horse', Daddy didn't come and so the little boy shouted it again, as I continued to wave at him. Finally, the third time that the boy yelled for his daddy, he finally came to the open door of the store and looked shocked. I said to him 'Didn't believe him eh?', and he laughed and said that he didn't. This was Steve the firefighter from White River and his son. What a small world. One of the parents that works for the Ministry was telling me that we just rode through the thickest moose populated area on the route. He also mentioned that there was at least one pack of wolves in this area that had a population of 14. He had picked up two wolf road kills on the road in the past few days. Steve also told Rhonda that there was a dead moose close to town and there had been 5 wolves feeding on it. No wonder Rapper was a little 'edgy'. We set up for the night at the farm of Kevin and Jean Morgan. I believe that they are pretty much the only horse owners here, so we are fortunate to have the horses in their paddocks. We were invited to have showers at their White River Motel and then they fed us a wonderful supper. Rhonda also found that she loves shrimp. We're all tired tonight and my legs are a little weary. Rumor has it, I'll be riding in the rain tomorrow.

April 26, 2008 - Got up this morning to some rainy weather. Saddled up and headed out of White River. Ran in to some rain, sleet and snow as well as quite a bit of strong winds. I wore the rain blanket that Showcase Horse Products made for this ride. I covered most of Coco from myself, back and the saddle. Things stayed dry. Coco is sure in good shape, I wasn't feeling very well as the ride went on and I tried to slow her out of a trot as my stomach was hurting during all the trotting. But there was no slowing her down. We finished the ride and then headed back to our stayover in White River. Rosa gathered her things and then Rhonda took her back to Sault Ste Marie to head to the airport. I'm sorry to see Rosa leave, as we had such a good time. I can't believe that a week passed by so quickly. Rhonda will pick up Diane Gallant at the airport tomorrow morning and then they'll head back here. I look forward to a week with Diane, she's a lot of fun and another good horse person. I sure feel bad for all of the people on this northern stretch. A lot of mills have shut down and the towns are in rough shape. There is a sadness amongst the people as they love where they live, but many are finding it hard to keep their heads above water. I really feel sad for them, I hope that they can ride this downtime and become prosperous again, so that they don't have to leave these homes/towns that are so dear to them. I have cell coverage and internet service so I am able to catch up on emails and phone calls. It's 10:00, the weather isn't very nice out, now snowing and blowing so I'm heading to bed, I'm feeling really pooped.

April 27, 2008 - I can’t believe it, I slept 11 ˝ hours. I don’t know if and when I’ve ever done that. I definitely needed it. When I got up the weather was terrible. Lots of snow, wind and cold temps. I felt sorry for the horses to have to bear this weather through the night, but I guess they’re pretty tough as they manage minus 30 & 40 temps at home. I feel much better today after such a good sleep. I had a slow morning and just hung out at the trailer with the horses. I made a pot of homemade soup, as this is a good day for it. Rhonda and Diane arrived at 4:30, I was happy to see them. We went over to the White River Motel for showers and then Kevin and Jeanne asked us to pray for their son and daughter-in-law and their unborn twins, as she was in the hospital having labour pains at 26 weeks into her pregnancy. Kevin then came over to the trailer and gave us supper that they cooked and told us that they were heading to Kingston at 5:00 a.m. to be at the hospital. Later on in the evening we went back, had a group prayer and then they received a phone call to say that both babies were born and doing well. Baby boy 1 and Baby Boy 2 were both over 2 pounds each. Great news! They were relieved. CONGRATULATIONS to Kevin and Jeanne for becoming grandparents for the first time and another big CONGRATULATIONS to Derrick & Kristin Morgan on the birth of their 2 precious twin boys.

April 28, 2008 - Cold morning!! Did some running around in White River this a.m., bankingetc. This town is so small, it seems like everyone knows everyone, so nice. We headed to Gloria's Motel to our starting point and had a wonderful lunch donated by the owners, John & Marlene Edwards and their staff Lynette, gave us one of her delicious banana breads. I certainly recommend a stopover at this place for a meal on the way through. The terrain today was curvy and hilly to start and then leveled off. Saw my first turkey vultures on the side of the road today, feeding on a rather small carcass. Champagne didn't even react to them, though she did react to ice breaking and falling from the rock cuts beside us. Her first reaction was rather minor, the second one caught me off guard. I quickly looked to see if anyone saw me. I was lucky no one did. A lady stopped us on the road and said that she saw me riding in Batchawana Bay and felt bad for me so she tracked me to give us a donation. Diane did great on her first day of driving. Rhonda is quite a pro at slowing down traffic, especially those big trucks. A little thing like her sure is powerful. We arrived into Marathon, made a stop and received a donation from Rolli at May's Gift Shop and then headed to the golf course where we are spending the night. We received a phone call to say that there were people expecting us at the mall so we headed there. The paper and the radio station were there to greet us, several towns people, as well as Mayor and Council. Brenda Oellett arranged for a lot of this exposure and also arranged for a donated delicious meal from Rumors Coffee House & Deli. Brenda, her husband, and sons donated 12 bales of hay and delivered them to the golf course and loaded them for us. Great people. There's an incredible view from the last hole, of Lake Superior. I wish the weather was suitable for golfing - I'd be out there. I don't really mind this cooler weather, as long as I am riding. When I stop I get chilled. The cooler weather also delays those nasty bugs. Off into the direction of Terrace Bay tomorrow.

April 29, 2008 - Well, woke up a little chilly this a.m. as the propane wasn't switched over properly last night and we had no heat. I woke up rather warm, as I have 2 feather duvets on my bed, but poor Diane with her tiny blanket, was a little popsicle. After filling our propane tanks, we had breakfast at Madeleine's Diner and then we drove to May's Gift Shop and met with the owners, Rollie, Ivan and their daughter, Louise. What a beautiful unique store. I would highly recommend a stop here to anyone who's driving through. Rollie is very moved by this project as her 3 year old granddaughter, Allison, had to have open heart surgery and is doing well. Rollie has donated one of her large, and beautiful horse statues as a draw prize for all those who donate to Giddy Up For Wishes, through the pamphlets, that she has at her store. She has named the horse 'Champagne' and the draw will take place on July 1st. What a great, creative way to help fundraise for Giddy Up For Wishes for the Children's Wish Foundation. Even though I have ridden through different areas there are still people who will fundraise and mail donations after the horse and rider are long out of sight. Rick and Joanne Decheno, donated 2 bug blocker pullovers, as they were concerned about us running into 'northern Ontario bugs'. Very nice, and thoughtful gesture. Saddled up and headed out on Rapper. The terrain here was quite challenging with many tight curves, long hills and no shoulders. Rhonda and Diane did a great job protecting us and keeping us safe, considering all that they had to deal with. No relaxing behind the wheel, especially when the snow squalls blocked our vision. I could barely see as the flakes were so big, so I motioned to Diane to pull over Just as I did, Rhonda told us that she had her radio in hand to tell us to stop, as she totally lost sight of us. A total white out. We quickly threw Rapper in the trailer and headed to safer conditions to continue the ride. We arrived at Jack Fish Lake at Garth and Vicky Morris's place. Had a wonderful visit with Garth as Vicky was in Marathon at work. Such an interesting man, with an overwhelming amount of horse knowledge. Vets are hard to come by in these parts where there is such a small amount of horse people, that you have to learn a lot on your own to manage the health of your horses and Garth is sure a great example of that. Cooked a meal in the trailer, had some great laughs and hit the sack.

April 30, 2008 - Rode from Jack Fish Lake to Schreiber. A nice day, still a little chilly. Lots of hills and corners, though not as intense as yesterday, and the shoulders are wider. The scenery through Terrace Bay is breathtaking. I was amazed to hear that they have inland caribou here. Over 350 on Slate Island which is 11 kms off the shore of Terrace Bay. We drove back to Terrace Bay for a meet and greet with the Lions and the CAO and Council members as well as a few members of the Emergency Services Dept. The local baker had made a slab cake with Giddy Up For Wishes logo, done so very well, I hated to cut it. There was a nice turnout and we had some great, eager kids, especially Brett, who will be approaching their schools on how to raise money for us. The interest amongst these children was quite heartwarming. We spent a couple of hours hearing all about the history of this area and then headed back to Garth's. We continued to have great conversations, (Garth had a lot of fun with Rhonda as she was gullible, very gullible, and she believed every story that Garth told her, even though some were told with tongue in cheek). Diane wasn't quite as gullible though she thought she should support Rhonda and believe the odd tale here and there. We had quite a few people stop by to visit with us at Garth's, as a lot of these people board their horses there. Garth and his son Chris, are quite the vehicle enthusiasts with many cars, trucks, semis, snowmachines, back hoes, etc. In talking to Garth he has such a warm heart and takes in so many rescue animals, and nurses them to a great life. We saw his hermaphrodite horse, 1 ton steer named 'Moo' ( that was rescued from a truck wreck), a very old miniature horse, an ornery pygmy goat, and many other horses with physical ailments that have all improved since coming to the loving hands of Garth. He takes such good care of his animals. He has such beautiful Clydes. A great and generous man.
