St.
Olha of Kyiv, Equal-to-the-Apostles, Great Princess of Kyiv
About
the year 890 St. Olha (Olga in Russian) was born in Pskov, some 500 miles
northwest of Kyiv. Between 935 and 940 she married Prince Ihor of Kyiv.
Following his death in 954, she served as regent until her son Sviatoslav
became ruler. At her baptism (about the year 954) she took the name Helena.
She died in Kyiv 11 July 969, at almost eighty years of age. Her feastday is
the anniversary of her death.

St.
Volodymyr the Great, Equal-to-the-Apostles, Grand Prince of Kyiv
The
son of Grand Prince Sviatoslav and the grandson of St. Olga, St. Volodymyr
(Vladimir in Russian) was born in Kyiv c.957. After sending delegates to the
Jewish Khazars, the Roman Catholic Germans and the Orthodox of Constantinople,
he chose the last for the faith of his people. On 1 August 988, by his decree
all the people of Kyiv were baptized in the Dnieper River. He died in
Vyshhorod near Kyiv, 15 July 1015.

Venerable
Nestor the Chronicler
This
renowned historian of Kyivan Rus’ was born c.1047. At the age of seventeen he
entered the Monastery of the Caves where he wrote his three principal works: A
Discourse on the Princes Borys and Hlib, The Life of the Venerable Teodosiy and
The Tale of Bygone Years. Noted for his humility, obedience and severe
fasting he reposed in the Lord at the monastery on 10 November 1114 aged 67
years. October 27 is his feastday.
