Hieromartyr St. Josaphat Kuntsevych of PolotskHieromartyr St. Josaphat Kuntsevych of Polotsk

Born 1580, martyred in Vitebsk, Byelorussia 12 November 1623. Following the death of Archbishop Hedeon Brolnyckyj (1601-1618) King Sigismund II transferred the eparchy to the Titular Bishop of Vitebsk, Josaphat Kuntsevych. He was succeeded by Archbishop Antin Seljava, 1624-1655. St. Josaphat's feastday is the anniversary of his repose. Pope Pius IX canonized him on 29 June 1867.

Andrew Sheptytsky, Metropolitan of L’viv in Galicia


Known as “the Apostle of Unity” Metropolitan Andrew was born 29 July 1865; died in L'viv, 1 November 1944. He succeeded Bishop Julian Sas-Kuyilovskj (1891-1899) as Bishop of Stanyslaviv, 20 September 1899. Pope Leo XII confirmed him as Metropolitan of L'viv 17 December 1900 when he again succeeded Bishop Sas-Kuyilovskj (1899-1900). He was enthroned in St. George’s Cathedral, L’viv 17 January 1901, and was succeeded by Metropolitan Josyf Slipyj (1944-1982).

Born 17 Feb.1892 in Zazdrist, Terebolja, Ukraine; reposed 7 September 1984 in Rome; consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of L'viv, 22 December 1939. On 1 November 1944 he succeeded Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky as Metropolitan of L'viv. Imprisoned by the Soviets in 1945 and freed 9 February 1963; also known as "Josyf the Confessor." He was succeeded by Archbishop Myroslav Ivan Lubachivsky, previously Metropolitan of Philadelphia, USA.

Blessed Nykyta Budka


Bishop Budka was born 7 June 1877 in Dobromirka, Ukraine. On 13 October 1912 Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky consecrated him the first bishop of the Greek Catholic Church in Canada with Winnipeg, Manitoba as his cathedral city. He resigned in 1928 and returned to L'viv where he became Auxiliary Bishop to Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky. He died a martyr 6 October 1949 in Karaganda, Siberia, and was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 27 June 2001.

Metropolitan Maxim Hermaniuk, CSsr.


He was born in Nove Selo, Ukraine, in the diocese of Peremyshl, on 30 October 1911. On 29 June 1951 he was consecrated auxiliary bishop to Archbishop Vasyl Ladyka, primate of the Greek Catholic Church of Canada. On 3 November 1956, following the death of Archbishop Ladyka, he was appointed first Archbishop Metropolitan of Canada. At his last public event in Winnipeg on 3 November 1996 he encouraged the youth of the church to share their faith with others. Later that evening he reposed in the Lord, at age 85.

He was also a spiritual father to Tzar Alexander II, whom he gave communion on the day of his death.

Blessed Bishop Vasyl Velychkovsky, CSsrR., Bishop of Lutsk


This courageous Confessor of the Faith was born in Stanyslaviv, Ukraine, 1 June 1903 to a well-known priestly family. Nominated Bishop of Lutsk, Ukraine in 1959, he was secretly consecrated bishop by Metropolitan Slipyj in a Moscow hotel on 4 February 1963. After suffering several years of brutal imprisonment, he was released in 1972 and came to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he reposed on 30 June 1973. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II, 27 June 2001. His incorrupt body is enshrined in St. Joseph Ukrainian Catholic Church in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

His motto – “Through adversity to the stars” – proved to be prophetic, uniquely appropriate for a Confessor of the Faith. Because Bishop Slipyj placed his episcopal ministry under the Protection of the Mother of God, his Coat of Arms includes that icon. Above it is the symbol of his dignity as a Prince of the Church, the wide-brimmed cardinal hat, deep scarlet in colour, symbolizing the readiness of a Cardinal to shed his blood for the cause of Christ.
