Personal Environmental
Health
Personal Environmental Health is
based on five areas of interest: supported environment, detoxifying properly,
state of mind, personal spiritual connection, and whole foods with exercise.
It is no secret that
we live in a Toxic World. I can go on about how we got here or be more
productive and talk about what we can do now that we are already here. Did you
know the everyday functions of breathing, eating, drinking and bathing is
sufficient to accumulate toxins?
How do we take good
care of ourselves and survive in a toxic world? What we do know now is that
the mind and body have continual interactions and reactions they are not
independent of each other. The mind and body are intimately connected. With
this knowledge, we at Inspired 5 believe that it is each individuals personal
responsibility to have a balanced body, for without a balanced body it is very
difficult to have a balanced mind. Think about it. When you're tired, or have
aches and pains, coughing, colds, flus, experiencing an allergic or
sensitivity reaction or whether your body is out of balance, your mind reacts.
Your personality and attitude becomes very cranky or angry, sad, lack of
concentration, forgetful, scared, and uninspired. Then everything from
interacting with family and friends to brushing your teeth and trying to
manage your day all becomes much more difficult. Sometimes overwhelming
feelings may surface in your life or days that seem impossible to accommodate
or accomplish.
If you are now living
a life that is not fully working for you, having too many difficult days
struggling to get through, and feeling if I only had more energy and felt
better life would be easier: you would be right, it would be easier.
Interesting enough, for most running low on energy, feeling tired and stressed
with an unbalanced body and mind happened so slowly and gradually over a long
period of time that we were unaware it was even occurring. Now the question
remains, "Am I tired or toxic? Am I ill or out of balance?"
Never be in denial of
some aches, pains or changes that may be occurring in your body and mind.
Always be responsible to yourself and have a good physical exam from a Doctor
you trust, who knows you well and has your best interest at heart. After you
have had your exams and made any necessary changes medically that may be
required, you are ready to add the personal environmental health program to
your life.
Now is the time to
re-energize, change our thinking and take charge of our body, mind and
environment and achieve creating a life for ourselves that is full of
happiness, health and desires fulfilled. It starts with having a balanced body
and mind and learning how important it is to live in a supported environment
to maintain that balance.
It does not have to
be an all or nothing program, you can start slowly and keep on a steady
course, and one day you will wake up re-energized, full of optimism, joy and
curious about the world around you and the day that is ahead of you.
Personal
Environmental Health is based on 5 areas of interest: Supported
Environment, Detoxifying Properly, State of Mind, Personal Spiritual
Connection and Whole Foods with Exercise. Each of these 5 areas will have its
own section full of information and suggestions to help guide you on your
journey.
We are hoping that
you become as inspired as we did when blazing a trail towards your balanced
health. We are not asking you to take our word for it, try it and test it out
yourself. If it works for you it's yours. See if your life and body responds
as well as ours did.
Even though the
journey you are about to take can be challenging, tough at times and slightly
confusing, it is worth the time to experiment with it and you will see changes
take place that will allow you more freedom in your body and mind. Then you
will have yourself to thank for taking charge of your life and becoming all
that you were created to be while not leaving your future to chance. We are
fortunate to live in a time where we have a great deal of information
available to teach us how to prevent illness and stay energized while living
long, healthy and interesting lives. Let's take advantage of what has been
learned and use it.
Let's get started
with the intent of making your journey gentle and joyful. Remember that we are
here to support you along the way. If you have any questions, go to "ask
Carole" on our web site at www.inspired5.com and email us.
Supported Environment
Section One
Right now it might be
hard for you to change your outdoor environment and you may be limited on your
indoor environment. We all have boundries when it comes to financial
restraints and for many of us there are other family members that also have to
be taken into consideration. So we will start very slow with changing our
indoor environments with a supported program, that will suit most of your
needs, and will make major differences in most bodies and minds.
Most of us have heard
by now how toxic our indoor environments have become with the way we now
construct our living spaces, how we have chosen to furnish those spaces and
how we choose to clean them. We are continually producing, and for most of us
on a daily basis, a toxic mix of chemicals that are creating a burden on our
body and mind.
The first step is to
educate ourselves to learn what is safe and what is not, what we bring into
our home and the effects it has on us. I would like to say at this point, you
will hear mostly from chemical companies that their products and chemicals are
safe and they may even have test results that say this is so. One thing that
the chemical companies will never be able to produce for you is a test that
has tested all the chemicals mixed together and their reactions and found them
safe. Unfortunately, many chemicals are unregulated that are put into common
household cleaners. Until they have more information for us on how really safe
the chemicals are, or unsafe as many of us are now personally experiencing, it
is wise to become your own body's detective and see what your body responds
to. In order to be able to do this you have to have a sense of body awareness.
A body that is currrently living in a compromised environment has a hard time
being aware. So lets get started and do our best to clean up what we have
right now and to make our homes as toxic free as possible.
The Goal is to have Non-Toxic Household Cleaning Supplies
and Clean Air to Breathe
Modern household
cleaning products were invented to be more effective and save us time. Our
grandmothers had to be creative and do a lot of scrubbing. Synthetic cleaning
compounds, anti-redeposition agents, chlorine bleaches, builders and optical
brightners have produced a generation of cleaners that work under more varied
conditions, against more forms of dirt, in colder waters and with less effort
on our part.
But in our attempts
to save time and get our clothes cleaner and whiter, or homes fresher smelling
and cleaner then ever before, we've accepted and invited into our homes a
plethora of chemicals in conventional household cleaning products that are not
even allowed to be used in work places due to having unsafe chemicals in the
products and are regulated under Occupational Health and Safety Administration
(OSHA) Regulations. We need to be more aware of what we so trustingly and
freely invite into our homes.
What you will want to
eliminate in your household cleaning supplies and household support are the
following chemicals.
Glycol Ether
Nonyl Phenol
Preservatives or Fillers, Butyl Phosphate
Dyes, Diethanolamine,
or DHA
PGE, Ceteareths,
Synthetic Fragrances
Pesticides, Alcohols
Chlorine, Mothballs
Ammonia, MEA
Petrochemicals
Solvents, EDTA
and anything
that has harsh irritating fumes.
Write the above list
down and take it to the store with you when you are thinking about buying
something and bringing it into your home.
The key here is back
to basics. You can go as simple as you want and clean with vinegar, baking
soda and borax. If you chose this method for cleaning, go to our
Recommended Reading Page at
www.inspired5.com and you can order books by Debra Lynn Dadd and she will show
you how to clean your home by making your own cleaning products, or if you
prefer to buy commerical products, like I do, the list below is what I use and
recommend.
Inspired 5 Recommends
The following products can be found at
most health food stores. For your convenience Inspired 5 will soon be carrying
some of these products.
For General Cleaning: Cleaner and Degreaser
by Bi-O-Kleen, I use it for everything in my whole house including the
toilets.
For Automatic Dishwashers : Do not buy
products with chlorine and fragrances in them as you will be breating in the
vapors. Most of you already have to deal with the chlorine in your public
water system. We recommend Seventh Generation, Bio-Kleen or Trader Joe's for
automatic dishwashers. Try different ones to find out which one works best in
your water condition.
For Dishwashing:
Bi-O-Kleen Cleaner and Degreaser.
For the Washing Machine:
Seventh Generation has a new product out called Sensitive Care natural laundry
detergent. It is made to be extra gentle on sensitive skin and fabrics, has no
enzymes and is free of dyes and fragrances. At the very least, make sure your
laundry detergent is dye and fragrance free. For bleaching clothes I recommend
using Hydrogen Peroxide or Amelia's Soapworks Oxygen Bleach.
For Stains & Odor Removers: Bi-O-Kleen has
a product called Bac-Out Stain &Odor Eliminator. It is made with live enzymes
and destroy stains and odors safely and naturally. Earth Friendly Products has
an Everyday Stain an Odor Remover in a spray bottle that removes organic
stains and odors. Both can be used for stains and odors from pets, diapers,
drains, carpets, laundry, bathroom soap scum, mold, mildew and toilet stains.
Another way to remove toilet stains, and this would be my first choice, is the
Amelia's Soapworks Oxygen Bleach. Flush toilet and just before the water
starts to refill pour in the Amelia's and let set for awhile then reflush
before using the toilet.
For Carpet Cleaning and deodorizing: Use
AMF Safe Choice Carpet Shampoo. After carpets are shampooed do not use any
scotch guard. Taking shoes off at the door will help keep your carpet cleaner
and not track in the dirt and chemicals that may be picked up outside the
home. Some sources of shoe contamination come from walking on the lawn, public
flooring, pesticides spraying, molds and fungus. The list is endless.
For carpet
deodorizing there is carpet deodorizer by Eco Fresh. It removes odors form
carpets and upholstery and is chemical free, or you can deodorize dry carpets
by sprinkling liberally with baking soda. Wait at least 15 minutes and vaccum,
repeat if necessary.
If you have
new carpets, which can be one of the biggest mix of chemicals one can bring
into their home, first clean thoroughly with AMF Safe Choice Carpet Shampoo
and then treat with AMF Carpet Seal, to seal the carpet from out gassing and
prevent you from inhaling the vapors.
For Window and Glass
Cleaning: I hired a professional janitorial window cleaner one time to teach
me how to clean windows and much to my surprise this is what I learned and
have used for the last 20 years; He told me most people when cleaning their
windows are just pushing dirt around and not cleaning their windows and that's
why they struggle to get rid of the film residue and streaking. All you need
is a bucket, water, a few drops of your dishwashing soap and a squeegee with a
cloth cover and blade. First use the cloth cover to wet and cover the windows
with your soapy water, then remove the cover and with the blade, remove
mixture. That's it! You're done and you will be impressed at the ease and how
clean the windows are. I also use this method for my bathroom mirrors.
