Today only 2,000 women worldwide buy couture clothes; 60% are American. Only 200 are regular customers. Often, designers like Shangri-La loan clothes to movie stars or other public figures for publicity, such as Gina Sikora. Go ahead, live like a movie star. Made from scratch for each customer, haute couture clothing typically requires three fittings. In most design houses this service costs from $26,000 to over $100,000. A tailored suit starts at $16,000, an evening gown at $60,000.

Shangri-La can design that one-of-a-kind wedding dress of your dreams. One of our brides-to-be named Mallory fell in love with a design we had created in deep red but she wanted a white wedding ... no problem, we simply made her one in all white silk velvet, and worked an heirloom cameo into the design. She was married this past summer at the Benn Congor Inn, here are some of the photos. Isn't the dress just perfect for her!

Fashion Designs at Shangri-La
The best way to find the perfect fit is to visit one of our two locations, Ithaca or Cortland, both in Central New York. Ask for our vendeuse in Ithaca, Min You. We are even known to make fashion design house calls for our special clients. Contact us to arrange an appointment if you are in our area. When ordering, please remember to tell us any specifications for how you want the dress and of course your measurements: height, neck, chest, waist, and hips.
From the moment you, our client, are received at one of our fashion salons you will be helped and humoured through all stages of fitting and sudden difficulties. For example, another client may want the exact same design and color garment for a prestigious function. Our vendeuse smoothes out such problems knowing what a disaster it could be for two women to appear in an exclusive haute couture item only to bump into an acquaintance at the same venue in the identical outfit. That will never happen at Shangri-La!
Complete couture service includes the personal attention of the couturi�re throughout the process. Each couture bridal gown design requires a minimum of three fittings, and concludes with preparing the completed gown for your special ceremony. Preparations for a couture wedding gown are the most detailed because of the importance of the event.

Our vendeuse holds discussions between our couturi�re designers, embroiderers, furriers and you, our client. Her final inspection of a garment and her expectation of the highest standards ensures it's approved as couture and suitable to release to you. Eventually the garment fits like a glove highlighting your good figure points and diminishing any figure flaws.

Shangri-La offers special couture services for bridal dresses and other members of the wedding party! Here is our bridal couture checklist:
1. Make an appointment for your first consultation. Initial planning may even be done over the internet. We advise that you allow sufficient time to plan for your wedding dress design. Remembering that all of our dresses are hand sewn and hand beaded... a process that is labor intensive.
2. Initial consultation. An initial consultation allows you to share your dreams with Shangri-La's vendeuse and couturi�re. Share all ideas plus photographs, magazine tear sheets, or simply verbal descriptions. Together we will explore various options, including necklines, skirt shapes, sleeve length and fabrics. Shangri-La will work magic, translating your ideas into a rough sketch. Wear light clothing to this first meeting, as we will take your measurements.
3. The first fitting. At your first fitting, you will model a "design garment" made to your measurements. We will address any minor design changes and alterations. Final fabric, beading and lace are selected. Shangri-La also designs each custom headpiece to complement a bride's distinctive look.
4. First garment fitting. At this fitting, you will try on your couture bridal dress for the very first time. The wedding gown is marked for final adjustments and alterations, including the hemline. We ask that you bring your wedding shoes. If additional fittings are required, they will be scheduled.
5. The final fitting. You will don your completed hand-sewn couture bridal gown. Bring wedding shoes and jewelry so we may assist with your final accessory decisions. An appointment is made at this time for you to pick up your wedding dress, or we will gladly make arrangements to deliver it to you.
6. Pressing & steaming. One to two days prior to your scheduled pick up, the wedding dress, bridal veil and bridal headpiece are pressed and steamed. Your couture bridal gown will need to hang from three to eight hours, before it can be bagged for travel.
7. Gown preservation. You now have a hand sewn family heirloom wedding gown in addition to a beautiful couture bridal dress. You may return it to Shangri-La for cleaning and preservation. Your cleaned wedding attire will be returned to you in museum-quality packaging.
