A ballpoint pen has an internal chamber that is filled with a viscous ink [ballpoint ink refill] that is dispensed at the tip during use by the "rolling action" of a small metal sphere. That metal sphere size determines the ink line size, i.e. 0.7 mm, etc.. The metal sphere may be made of brass, tungsten carbide or steel. The ballpoint ink dries almost immediately after contact with paper. Since its original appearance on the writing scene, the ballpoint pen has become the most popular tool for everyday writing, replacing the fountain pen. Liquid Ink Ballpoint:
Here, the refill is water-based liquid ink versus the oil-based inks found in most ballpoint ink refills. This is very similar to the same liquid ink found in a roller ball refill. This water-based ink tends to saturate more deeply and more widely into the paper than a regular ballpoint ink refill. Also, you will find that the "fine" tipped liquid ink ballpoint refill may have a tendency to lay the same line as a "medium" standard ballpoint ink refill.
Despite some of the above negatives, the liquid ink ball point refill is advantageous over the standard ballpoint ink refill in that [1] less pressure is needed to apply to the pen to have it write cleainly and, therefore [2] the pen may be held with less stress/pressure reducing hand writing fatigue.
