Training With Delivery Methods of Pepper Spray

There are several different methods of delivering the pepper spray you want to initiate. One or more may be what you want. These methods are:

Stream (broken and heavy):

Stream sprays deliver this deterrent in a stream, making it more difficult for some people to use and “hit” their target. This method does have an advantage in that it can be sprayed from a distance. Stream sprays can be effective from 15 to 20 feet. The spray is less affected by wind because the stream is coming out of the container at a faster rate. It should not “blow” back in the users face because there is little misting of the product.

Stream sprays may have an advantage with spraying multiple attackers—hitting them in the dark, in tight areas that have little room for hitting, such as through an open window of a car or building. The stream spray helps with the aim and can be very effective. If you should miss your target, you can fan the spray to give yourself more of a covered area. Unfortunately, the can will empty very fast, even though it provides a heavy blast of pepper spray.

Cone:

The cone sprays have a wider pattern that is composed of a fine mist. This type of sprayer can be very effective when directed toward the attackers eyes, although the distance for use is shorter; only 6 to 12 feet, and the spray may be blown back in the users face if the wind is blowing the right direction. The pattern of spray is usually about 2 feet wide at its maximum distance. The pattern is such that it will most likely cover the attacker’s whole face.

Fogger:

The fogger allows the spray discharge to be like a very fine mist barrier in the air. Care must be taken not to breath the mist after you have discharged the product, especially when used outdoors. It works similar to a fire extinguisher in that it makes a barrier cloud in the area you spray the product. This is a very effective way to put a barrier between you and the attacker, and can be very effective for use against bears. If you should get “blowback” you would most likely experience tearing and a cough, but nothing like the attacker would experience. Take care of the direction of the wind.

Foam:

You are less likely to experience “blowback” with this type of discharge. There is the possibility of very little, if any blowback contaminating you. It is excellent for immediate saturation. The foam spray is like a shaving cream. It doesn’t just wipe off. When the attacker tries, it just smears around the area sprayed.

Remember: Get out of the way. Leave the area as quickly as you can. Even though the pepper spray is very effective, it may take time and your attacker may continue to come toward you.
