How We Discovered &
Developed This Business
In the 90's, my wife and I
moved to a
remote area in Oregon. We wanted something to do to fill our time and bring in
some additional income. We didn’t want to work for anyone else, nor open an
office or retail store, so we began looking for a home based business.
We
researched numerous home-business opportunities, discarding most as either not
profitable enough; taking too much time and/or money to start; taking too long
before any real cash flow developed; or businesses not suiting our interests.
Then we began looking at uncovering and filling “needs” that
no one else seemed to be addressing. Although there were some interesting
overlooked possibilities, most of them fell into the same categories as those
we’d previously decided against.
Finally it happened! One day
we met a friend at his office for lunch. When we got there he said, “Where would
you like to go to lunch?” We replied, “Oh, we don’t know, wherever you want to
go?” Pretty typical, right? The same thing has probably happened to you lots of
times. Well from that seemingly offhand exchange, one that occurs dozens of
times a day in most offices and businesses, came the idea for the business we
started.
When we got home I said, “Something happened today that’s
sparked an idea that may be just what we’ve been looking for. Remember the
conversation we had with Al about ‘where to go to lunch’? Well, I can remember
that same dialog being repeated hundreds of times in offices where I've worked.
If you think about it, that scenario creates an opportunity because it’s both a
need and a want!"
"What if we could deliver
‘mouth-watering’ descriptive food specials by fax, from restaurants that were
looking for customers, to lots of ‘hungry’ business people just when they were
thinking about going out to eat? We’d be helping people who eat out with their
“where should we go to lunch today” decision and we’d provide customers for the
restaurants."
"Assuming that it didn’t cost the businesses anything
and didn’t take up the employees’ time, how many businesses do you think would
be interested? And if we could come up with simple convincing, cost effective
reasons for the restaurants to give it a try, don’t you think they’d at least
give it a try?”
That was the start - a very simple premise - find a need and
fill it. Now all we had to do was to prove there really was an interest by both
prospective restaurant clients, and potential business customers. So we did a
little market research. The feedback we got from local business people,
validated our concept, so we put together the pieces, then tested and refined
the idea until the concept evolved into what is today ... the “Just The
Fax Restaurant Lunch Specials Fax Service.”
After we worked the bugs out and my wife had been
successfully operating her JTF business for 8 months we put together all of our
experiences and materials into a 100 page Manual and Computer Disk. We then
began licensing our concept and business to others just like you. That was over
five years ago. With the expansion of our Licensee base, we’ve added the
suggestions, concepts and strategies that our Licensees developed on their own
in their markets, and our Manual has now grown to a very complete 130 page
turn-key Business Plan that anyone can easily follow.
