Green
Cove Station was built in 1912 and is still located on what was once the
Abingdon Branch of the Norfolk & Western
railway. In its heyday, William and Mary Buchanan operated Green Cove as
a freight office, general store and post office. The station
also served as the hub of the small community. Norfolk & Western abandoned
the Abingdon Branch in 1977. The route was later transformed into the Virginia
Creeper Trail, a recreational hiking and biking trail. The United States
Forest Service continues to operate the station as a rest stop. See "Links" under
the Resources section for more information.
