Clearly the most versatile German warplane of the World War II era, the Ju 88s production total reached nearly 15,000 aircraft. It was almost as fast as the fighters of the era, and combined with its superior maneuverability (as a bomber), the Ju 88 proved essential to Luftwaffe operations. The aircraft was equipped with one forward-firing 13 mm MG 131 or two 7.92 mm MG 81 machine-guns, two similar guns in the rear of the cockpit firing aft and two below the fuselage firing aft.
