Refinery Wastewater Tank Cleanup
A west coast refinery had a 200,000 barrel capacity primary wastewater tank with 8 feet of thick, oily sludge at it's bottom. The company had cleaned a smaller slop oil tank with less sludge a year before at a cost of $2 million using more traditional methods. This involved investing alot of manpower, time, equipment and effort at pulling the sludge out of the tank and centrifuging it, drying it and hauling the resultant 1,000 tons of hazardous waste for out-of-state disposal. It was decided that for this larger project, a better way had to be found.

Using Alabaster Corporation products and processes, this larger wastewater tank was cleaned in a few weeks at a total cost of only $300,000. In addition, over 4,000 barrels of oil were recovered which were valued at about $17,000. To quote from an article in the refinery's internal newsletter:

"When it comes to tank cleaning and handling oily sludges, it's not 'expensive' business as usual any more. Willingness to try a new approach avoided an expense in excess of $1.5M. For a total cost of less than $300,000, Alabaster Corporation products were used to clean Tank 21. The project was completed in just a few weeks, mostly with just one employee working at the tank. The tank was never opened, making it a very safe and healthy job. No hazardous waste was generated. Tank 21 was cleaned quickly, in a safe, healthy and very cost-effective way. The goals of the cleaning, to get the working volume of the tank back and to improve wastewater effluent quality, were achieved in a manner making this cleanup a huge success."
