Does your mind wander during the Rosary? Ours do.
Our family remedy is an old German tradition, in
which you insert a phrase into the middle of each
Hail Mary recalling the mystery. The insertion
brings the mind back to Christ's life.

Here's how it works:

First, begin each Hail Mary as usual with Gabrial's
and Elizabeth's salutation from St. Luke's gospel:
"Hail Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou, among women and blessed is the
fruit of thy womb, Jesus".

Second, insert the Mystery Phrase from below.

Finally, end up as usual with "Holy, Mary, Mother of
God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our
death."

The phrase depends on the mystery. So, putting it
all together, if you were praying the first Glorious
mystery, you'd pray on the hail mary beads as
follows:

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee!
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the
fruit of thy womb, Jesus, who was conceived by the
Holy Spirit. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us
sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Here are the mystery phrases:

Joyful Mysteries

1. (The Annunciation) Who was conceived by the
Holy Spirit

2. (The Visitation) Whom, you Oh Virgin, took to
see
Elizabeth

3. (The Nativity) To whom, you Oh Virgin, gave
birth.

4. (The Presentation) Whom you, Oh Virgin,
offered
up in the temple

5. (The Finding) Whom you, Oh Virgin, found again
in
the temple

Sorrowful Mysteries

1. ( Agony in the Garden ) Who sweated blood for
us

2. (The Scourging) Who was scourged for us

3. (Crowning with thorns) Who was crowned with
thorns for us

4. (Carrying the cross) Who bore the heavy cross
for
us

5. (The Crucifixion) Who was crucified for us

Glorious Mysteries
* (The Resurrection) Who rose from the dead

* (The Ascension) Who ascended into Heaven

* (Descent of the Holy Spirit) Who sent forth
the
Holy Spirit

* (Assumption) Who took you, Oh Virgin, into
Heaven

* (Coronation) Who crowned you, Oh Virgin, in
Heaven

At first, the additional line may be confusing,
which is why we don't recommend it if you're having
your Pastor over for dinner, or friends. But we've
found with practice the interlineation gently brings
the wandering mind back to the mystery at hand.
