- What is meant by Natural Colors?
At Greenwood Hill Farm, we raise both White and Natural Colored (black) MERINO sheep. Our Silver and Pewter yarns are blends of the white and black fiber.
- What patterns do you carry?
We carry patterns that are appropriate for our yarns. The patterns we recommend come from:
(our own)
- Green Mountain Spinnery
- Yankee Knitter Designs
- Cabin Fever
- Fiber Trends
- Silver Creek Classics
- What makes Merino Wool so much better than others?
The Merino wool fiber is the finest of all the wool fibers. The fine fiber gives the yarn its softness and itch free feel. All of the other “fine” wool sheep breeds were developed using the Merino as the foundation stock and none of them has fiber as fine as the Merino. The Spanish began developing the fine Merino fleece in the 1300’s and the refinement continues to this day.
- How important is it to check my gauge?
Very important! You should check your knitting gauge with every new project. Without knowing your gauge, you will find it difficult to impossible to properly size your project.
- How can I determine how much yarn I need?
By checking your pattern, for the size you are making, you will find a listing for either the number of skeins or yardage. Our yarns are listed with both measurements. We recommend you buy one extra skein just in case.
- How do I wash my Merino Wool garment?
Soak it in your sink using warm water and mild detergent. We use “Meadows Wool Wash” (available through the shop). Squeeze gently with your hands, rinse in warm water, squeeze again, rinse again in warm water and spin in your washer on SPIN ONLY to remove moisture. Lay the garment flat on a sweater dryer or a heavy towel. Keep in mind, felt is made using water, heat and agitation...you should avoid this scenario.
- Why Wool?
To start with, wool is a natural fiber! A woolen garment will last for generations when properly cared for. As compared to synthetic fibers, the wool advantage is that it takes no chemicals to produce wool.
- What do you mean by naturally raised wool?
Our sheep are pastured on grass and we use no chemicals. The hay we feed in the winter is organic and all of our grains are free of hormones and growth additives. We are serious about the natural quality of our wool and yarns. We even have our spinning done by Green Mountain Spinnery using their organic scouring process.
