The Slim Book of Rowing by Barrie Robinson
The Slim Book of Rowing is a 75 page book for beginners and a good refresher for old hands. It includes coaching and describes some excellent exercises. It is definately something you should take with you to read before an outing!

Water's Edge: Women Who Push the Limits in Rowing....

High Performance Rowing by John McArthur.
In addition to explaining the detials of rigging, physiology, technique, and training, the author explains the "why" and the "how" behind rigging and physiology. It will inspire and inform the beginner as well as the elite athlete.
Textbook of Oarsmanship : A Classic of Rowing Technical Literature by Gilbert C. Bourne.
This book is considered "the classic of classics" for the rowing world. It identifies the key component of rowing: theory, art, equipment, coaching, and muscular action. It also recognises the scientific undergirding of the sport, the ballet or ideal movement patterns, the mechanics and tools used by the athlete, the importance of a skilled mentor, and the recognition of the internal mechanics of the athlete's body. A "must read" for every rower.
The Complete Sculler by Burnell.
An excellent primer for the new athlete, it also points the experienced athlete and coach towards a thorough and holistic approach in the preparation of the "complete sculler". The author, an Olympic Gold Medallist, provides the sculler with sound advice to "look inward" when things go wrong in the boat.
The Art of Sculling by Joe Paduda.
This book provides both novice and experienced scullers with a comprehensive, illustrated guide to the equipment, techniques, and physiology of the sport. Beginners will find step-by-step instructions and photographs for launching and rigging a boat and developing the proper sculling stroke. Experienced rowers will find guidelines for developing training programs,advanced technique, racing, team boats, safety, and sculling for the more mature rower.

The Compleat Dr. Rowing by Andy Anderson.
A collection of the "greatest hits" from the popular "Ask Dr. Rowing" column in the Independent Rowing News. The Dr. answers questions pertaining to all things rowing, from "Did all of the members of that Japanese eight that rowed so high really die?" to "Why do oarsmen produce only daughters?"
