Rowing in the Pacific Northwest is primarily a club or college sport. Unlike some other areas where there are quite a few high school teams, here there are only a few, although many rowing clubs have programs for both "masters" rowers (adults) and "junior" rowers (usually high-school age).

There are many benefits to joining a rowing club. Many provide rowing lessons and encourage first-time rowers. Clubs may provide different levels of service for their members, as some want to row recreationally, others for fitness, and others for competition. The equipment is expensive, and there are definate benefits to sharing the cost of the shells, oars, and insurance, as well as providing a boathouse to store the boats.
