The following is a brief excerpt from the book "College Rowing Scholarships":

WHY HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELORS MAY NOT BE OF MUCH HELP

High school guidance counselors cannot be relied upon to help a rower get a scholarship. If the high school has an experienced rowing program, this might not be the case. But rowing programs in much of the United States are club sports, not directly a part of the high school. Even high schools that have programs to track potential scholarship athletes usually only apply those programs to the traditional school sports - football, basketball, baseball, track, wrestling, etc.. It is a rare high school guidance counselor that knows about the sport of rowing, the availability for rowing scholarships, or even which athletes in the school are rowers.

One student found this out the hard way. Her high school counselor thought it would be helpful to boost her final GPA in her Senior year by having her drop a difficult science class in favor of an easy elective. Looking at her graduation requirements, the science class wasn't needed. But the guidance counselor didn't realize that the student was a prime candidate for an athletic scholarship, and the student didn't realize that it was important for her to give that information to the guidance counselor.

It turned out that the science class was needed for NCAA academic eligibility, and the elective class she was taking in its place would not even count as one of the "core courses" considered by the NCAA in calculating the "core GPA".
The error was discovered too late to change back to the original science class, which was full by that time. Instead, the student had to take an additional science class by correspondence course from Brigam Young University, which was accepted as a science credit by both the high school and the NCAA. Everthing worked out in the end, but only because the rower's parents had reviewed the NCAA requirements and checked them again as soon as they learned of the schedule change.
