U.W.men beat Califorinia to win Pac-10 Championships
The Univ. of Washington men beat California to take the Pac 10 Championships near Sacramento, with both U.W. varsity 8+ boats winning first and third place. The Univ. of Washington women rowers took fourth overall, and Washington State women;s crew took fifth overall (Seattle Times, May 15, 2011).
SPU women wins at Dad Vaile, Men at Lake Natoma
The Seattle Pacific University women's crew team won the 8+ grand finale at the Dad Vaile Regatta in Pennsylvania, while the SPU men took third place at the Open Four at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships at Rancho Cordoba (Seattle Times, May 14, 2011).
Michigan, Purdue win Dad Vail Regatta
Michigan and Purde brought home top honors at the Dad Vail Regatta at the Schuylkill River near Philidelphia, besting rowers from over 130 colleges and universities from across the U.S. (Seattle Times, May 14, 2011)

U.W., Cal crew teams "need each other"
The 100 years of rivalry between the Univ. of Washington and Cal crew teams isn't just about west-coast bragging rights. Both schools bring out the best in each other, ensuring that both will be dominating factors in rowing at the nationals each year. The dual meets are just the yearly start of more races, including regional and national championship regattas where both teams will compete (Seattle Times, April 23, 2011).
U.W. men's crew defeats Cal for fifth time in Seattle
The Univ. of Washington men's crew team defeated second-ranked Cal for the fift time in a row in a dual meet held at Seattle's Mountlake Cut. The second varsity boat did well too, winning it's race by nearly four boat lengths and about ten seconds. But the Cal freshmen eight won their event, as did all the fourth-ranked women's crew races against the Univ. of Washington's seventh-ranked women's crew team (Seattle Times, April 23, 2011).

Mountlake Cut "A cut above the rest"

The Univ. of Washington and Univ. of California's rivalry in crew goes back a hundred years, and it's still the most competitive race either team encounters each year (Seattle Times, April 20, 2011).
Windermere Cup Celebrates 25th Year
Seattle's Opening Day Regatta (unofficially the "opening day of boating season") on May 7th, 2011 will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Windermere Cup, hosted by the Univ. of Washington. As visitors line the banks of Lake Washington and view the the final sprint through the Mountlake Cut to the finish line, the Univ. of Washington this year will be hosting Cambridge University, Stanford University, and Oklahoma State in this prestigious regatta. Preceeding the college races will be a score of junior and masters club races, which in turn will be preceeded by the relatively new dragon boat races (Source: Univ. of Washington website and press releases).
SPU wins over Seattle University
Seattle Pacific University rowers won all six races against Seattle University at a dual regatta in the Lake Washington Ship Canal over the weekend (Seattle Times 17April2011).
U.W. rowing coaches part of strong athletic program
The Univ. of Washington is building a strong athletic program of national contenders in multiple sports, and the Univ. of Washington men's and women's rowing programs are key elements in that success (Seattle Times, April 16, 2011).
UW Men, Women, and Seattle Pacific Rowers Win at weekend regattas
The Univ. of Washington men swept all four races against Oregon during a weekend regatta, and the Univ. of Washington women won all six races against Washington State. Seattle Pacific rowers took home the gold from the featured varsity race at the Covered Bridge Regatta in Lowell, Oregon (Seattle Times, April 9, 2011).
UW Women & Local Rowers Win at San Diego
The Univ. of Washington women pulled out wins in the Varsity B and Novice eights at the San Diego Classic. In addition, the Lake Union Crew Masters A boat took home the gold, as did the Everett Rowing Association JV eight (Seattle Times, April 3, 2011).
UW Women advance, WWU women dominate in early spring regattas
At the San Diego Classic the U.W. women saw their varsity one and two boats advance, as well as their novice eight. The Western Washington University Women continued to dominate their opponants in a dual regatta with Seattle Pacific University (Seattle Times, 02April2011).
WWU Women, WSU Win at Weekend Regattas
The Western Washington University women, the perenial Div. II champion team, won all it's races at the Daffodil Regatta on American Lake this past weekend. The Washington State University rowers won five of six races at it's duel meet at Gonzaga (Seattle Times, March 26, 2011).
Husky Junior Men Win Class Day Regatta in Controversial Finish
The Univ. of Washington senior men had won every class day regatta in their collegiate career, and expected to win their final one as seniors. They were leading into the last stretch before the finish line at the Montlake Cut, when an over-enthusiastic spectator blew an air-horn twice, causing both crews to prematurely think they had crossed the finish line. The junior boat recovered first, and managed to slip past the seniors at the finish line. As junior Jeff Gibbs said, ""The point we learned is you have to row to the line. But the seniors were ahead of us the whole race. They won the 1,980-meter race; we won the 2,000-meter race." (Seattle Times, March 26, 2011).
Oxford beats Cambridge in annual boat race
Continuing a tradition that began in 1829, the annual collegiate Boat Race took place on the Thames River in England, and this year Oxford overcame Cambridge to win the cup (Seattle P.I., March 26, 2011).
Photo Caption: Sammamish Rowing Association (SRA) brought over 200 competitors from the Eastside to this first rowing competition of the year, and brought home the total points win for both juniors and masters races. SRA won 19 gold medals on Saturday. Crews comprised of adults and teens from local towns Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland, Issaquah, Snoqualmie, North Bend, Woodinville, Seattle, Newcastle, and others around the Puget Sound area competed in this annual 1000 meter sprint race.
Everett Rower Work Hard on the Water
Chris Archer, an Anacortes High School student, drives seventy minutes twice a day, six days a week, to work hard training as a junior rower at Everett Rowing Association. "He's like a lot of other kids who engage in rowing. It's hard and it's demanding. No weaklings or uncommitted need apply." (Everett Herald, Feb. 22, 2011).
Ergomania Contest Hurts So Good
About 425 contestants competed at Ergomania at the Connolly Center at Seattle Pacific University, enduring a six-plus minute sprint and excutiating pain, all so they can glide through the water in the spring (Seattle Times, Feb. 5, 2011).
