History of the People of Mars Hill Baptist Church & Community 1799-1999
Five years of research, asking questions, and digging has resulted in this detailed history and genealogy on the people of the Mars Hill Community in present day Oconee County, Georgia.
The community was formed by the families who were early members of Mars Hill Baptist Church which was formed June 1, 1799 in then Jackson County, Georgia. This same Church is now located in Oconee County, but had previously been in Clarke County from 1801 until 1875 when Oconee was formed from the southern portion of Clarke County.
These families had previously been found living in the following counties in Georgia: Jackson, Clarke, Wilkes, Oglethorpe, Greene, Elbert, Madison, Walton, and Morgan. Some moved on to points westward, some remained in Georgia and others moved on to Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas and today have descendants all over the United States.
Included in this volume are the first two Church Minute Books transcriptions, the earliest existing membership list (1936), the Daniell Ledger/Bradberry Almanac (record of deaths in the Mars Hill Community), census records, estate records, cemetery and death records, Bible records, marriage records, and other records.
This volume contains nearly 500 pages of information, a full-name index, pictures, and maps. The largest portion is the coverage of family lineages, using all types of sources as well as information contributed by descendants.
