In this charming picture of Joseph Smith and his family during the Nauvoo period, the artist captures Joseph’s love for his family. Despite the many stressful moments in Joseph’s life, he managed to create some peaceful family moments.
After extensive historical research, the artist gives us a glimpse into Nauvoo life. The family is in front of the Mansion House. Upon close examination you will be able to see the symbols of the star, moon and sun on the bright cerulean blue rain box gutters near the roof of the Mansion House. These items are visible in old art and photo prints of the period. One of the original rain boxes can be found in the LDS Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City.
The Smith family had a variety of animals. Their black horse was named Charley, and their mastiff dog was named Major. It is recorded that Major was very loyal to Joseph, and when Joseph left for Carthage Major was intent on following him. When he was called to go home, he did not want to obey.
There are several short journal entries that express the Smith family’s love of sleigh rides. The artist has provided us with a charming scene of Joseph and Emma preparing for a ride in the snow. The artist captures the sparkle of love in the eyes of Joseph and Emma. They truly loved their children. Emma is tickling Alexander as he sits on the top of Joseph’s shoulders. Joseph III is holding Charley’s reins, while Frederick sits beside him. Daughter Julia is sitting in the back of the sleigh holding one of the family cats.
The painting is titled “Family Times” because it celebrates the good times that the Smith family had together. This is what Joseph and Emma would like all of us to do, set aside our difficult times and focus on the good experiences with our family.
