This sensitive image was painted by Daniel Ridgway Knight in 1892. The title "First Grief" causes our imagination to wonder what problem the two young girls are discussing. We feel that one is comforting the other. The girl who is overcome with sadness turns her face from us. She seems to want to turn away from the pain of life. Her friend extends her love and comfort. She reaches out to touch the hand of a dear friend who is weighed down by sadness.

This touching picture gives all of us gratitude for a good friend whose love and support brings us through the difficult challenges of life.
