Knowing what size pot to use makes a difference on how well your plants will do. Use pots that will last for years for perennials. Lightweight pots may tip if there are too high out of the water. Shorter wider pots are best for most plants. Tall plants need to have a heavy base to avoid tipping over. Use gravel on top of the soil to keep your fish from digging in the soil. Plants are much easier to maintain in pots rather than planting pockets. Use hole-less pots for plants that spread easily or have runners. Cattails should always be in containers if you don't want then to take over in a few years. Remember to label your plants well. I suggest placing a label in the bottom of the pot as well as attaching the label to the pot with zip ties.
