Most Commonly Mispronounced Words

Have you ever tried to say a word, and you just couldn't say it properly? Many words are hard to pronounce. In this list, you can see some of the English words that are the most difficult to say.

clothes
The e is silent.

February
You must pronounce both r's: Feb-roo-a-ree, not Feb-yoo-a-ree.

athlete
Make sure there are only two syllables: ath-leet, not ath-a-leet.

probably
This must have three syllables: prob-a-blee, not pra-lee or prob-lee.

colleague
Don't pronounce the final ue.

espresso
There is no x sound: e-spres-o, not ex-pres-o.

Wednesday
The d is silent.

escape
There is no x sound: es-cape not ex-cape.

library
The word has three syllables: li-bra-ry, not li-bary.

picture
This is the most commonly mispronounced word. It is pronounced pik-cher, not pit-cher.

frustrated
There is no l in this word. It is pronounced frus-tra-ted, not flus-tra-ted.

texted
Here is a new word that is used in connection to text messaging - Texted. Properly pronounced it would be one syllable, not two.

Establish
The word is pronounced es-tablish, not ex-tablish. There is no x in the word.

Salmon
Although there is a l in this word, folks, the l is silent. The word is pronounced sa-mon, not sal-mon.
