Vought's prototype F4U Corsair first flew on May 29, 1940. The first Vought built F4U-1 was delivered to the US Navy on July 31, 1944. As pilots became experienced in flying their powerful new fighter-bombers, they became formidable opponents. 12,681 Corsairs were built during World War II, many of which saw action in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.
