The B-17 Flying Fortress was designed in response to a US Army Air Corps requirement, issued in 1934, for a long-range, high-altitude daylight bomber. The B-17F entered production in 1942. The total production of the B-17F was 3,400. Production of the Fortress from the B-17F onwards, was shared between Boeing, Douglas and Lockheed-Vega.
