The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird flew for the first time on December 22, 1964.The Blackbird made an enormous contribution to the West's intellegence-gathering operations during the height of the Cold War. Its speed enabled it to outrun hostile surface-to-air missiles. Yhis aircraft was unsurpassed by any other manned reconnaissance system, and was so effective that it was brought out of retirement to undertake further missions in the 1990s.
