The F-16 Fighting Falcon, which was designed and built by General Dynamics as a USAF requirement for a lightweight fighter, first flew on February 2, 1974. It has proved hugely successful, equipping US-aligned air forces around the world. The F-16 is now produced by Lockheed Martin and is the most prolific combat aircraft with more than 2,000 in service with the USAF and another 2,000 in service with 19 other air forces around the world.
