McDonnell Douglas's F-15 Eagle, which flew for the first time on July 27, 1972 was designed to replace the F-4 Phantom. In all, the USAF took delivery of 1,286 F-15s (all versions), Japan 171, Saudi Arabia 98 and Israel 56. The F-15C established and maintained air superiority and saw much action in the Gulf War of 1991.
