Lockheed's L-188 Electra, which first flew in 1957, initially attracted significant orders from American Airlines and Eastern Airlines. There were fatal accidents early in the Electra's service life however, caused at root by an engine vibration problem. Investigation and redesign, coupled with the arrival of pure jet airliners, limited the Electra's potential, and only 170 were built up until 1961. However. the military Orion P-3 derivative met with great success.
