The tri-motor was the classic American landplane of the pre-DC-3 era, and it played a substantial role in the growth of air transport and mail carraige accross the USA. In 1925 Ford purchased the Stout Metal Airplane Company who first developed the tri-motor. The Pullman designed 3-AT was developed in 1926 but the design did not perform well. The model 4-AT was the result of the 3-AT's re-design and can be viewed as the first successful implementation of the Ford Tri-Motor series.
