Following on from the enormously successful J-3 Cub series, Piper lauched the PA-18 Super Cub in 1949. This new version featured a slightly larger wing, and a small stretch to the fuselage, and it was offered with (progressively) more powerful engines that gave it greater speed, height and range, making it popular with private flyers, as well as for agricultural and glider-towing functions.
