The Grumman Goose was developed in 1937 with civil executive/light transport roles in mind, but the high-wing amphibian's potential for armed coastal protection duties was realized by the US Army and US Navy. At the end of World War II there were many surplus examples in the US and UK. Some were sold for overseas military use and others converted for civil work, often with specialized airline/air taxi operators, for example in the Florida Keys.
