The prototype F4B fighter made its first flight in 1928. No aircraft captured the essence of the "Golden Age" of Naval Aviation more than Boeing's F4B-4 fighter. At the height of their service, the F4B-4s equipped five Navy and Marine Corps fighter squadrons. The classic aircraft remained in front-line service until 1938, at which time they began to be replaced by faster Grumman biplanes.
