Intended for operations from water bases among the scattered Pacific atolls, Nakajima's A6M2-N was a floatplane fighter adaptation of the A6M2 Zero. 327 aircraft were completed between April 1942 and September 1943. The allied code name was "Rufe". It was mainly used for home defense and reconnaissance, however it was occassionally encountered in its fighter role at the Aleutian Islands, Guadalcanal and over the Bay of Bengal.
