A prototype of the Douglas SBD Dauntless first flew in July 1935. The Dauntless served from the beginning to the end of the Pacific war, and was one of the most successful World War II dive-bombers, sinking a greater tonnage of Japanese shipping than any other type. The SBDs operated from the aircraft carriers, Lexington, Yorktown, Hornet and Enterprise during World War II and played a major role in the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway.
