The Grumman F6F Hellcat flew for the first time on June 26, 1942. The Hellcat incorporated many of the lessons learned in combat by F4F Wildcat pilots, and established US air superiority in the Pacific. The Hellcat played a prominent role in all US naval operations, in particular the Battle of the Philippine Sea in which American combat air patrols and anti-aircraft fire destroyed 325 enemy aircraft.
