Grumman's F4F-3 Wildcat first flew on February 12, 1939. The Wildcat held the line in the Pacific war for a critical period until more modern US naval fighters could be deployed. The first encounters between the Wildcat and the Zero showed that the F4F was inferior to the Japanese fighter on almost every count. Nevertheless, a number of US Navy pilots scored noteworthy victories while flying the Wildcat.
