The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was designed to meet the exacting requirements of a 1937 USAAC specification, calling for a high-altitude interceptor capable of 360mph and 290mph at sea level. The prototype first flew on January 27, 1939. The P-38 Lightning played a vital part in winning air superiority for the Allies, particularly in the Pacific theatre. Total Lightning production of all variants was 9,923.
