The B-17 Flying Fortress was designed in response to a US Army Air Corps requirement, issued in 1934, for a long-range, high-altitude daylight bomber. The B-17G was fitted with a chin turret as a defense against head on attacks. Production of the Fortress from the B-17F onwards, was shared between Boeing, Douglas and Lockheed-Vega, which between them produced 8,680 B-17Gs.
