The Tornado, which first flew in Germany on August 14, 1974, was developed by an International consortium formed under the name of Panavia. The variable-geometry Tornado was the result of a 1960s requirement for a strike and reconnaissance aircraft capable of carrying a heavy and varied weapons loan and of penetrating forseeable Warsaw Pact defensive systems by day and night.
