A development of the Lockheed Electra airliner, the P-3 Orion was Lockheed's winning submission in a 1958 US Navy contest for a new off-the-shelf ASW aircraft which could be brought into service very rapidly by modifying an existing type. The first of two prototypes flew on August 19, 1958. Total production of P-3A/B variants were 286 aircraft for the US Navy. The P3-C variant appeared in 1969 and 132 were delivered to the US Navy.
