McDonnell Douglas's F-15 Eagle, which flew for the first time on July 27, 1972 was designed to replace the F-4 Phantom. In all, the USAF took delivery of 1,286 F-15s (all versions). The F-15E is a dedicated strike/attack variant which first flew in 1982. The F-15E Strike Eage was at the forefront of precision bombing operations in the Gulf War of 1991.
