One of the most potent and versatile combat aircraft ever built, the McDonnell F-4 Phantom II, which first flew on May 27, 1958, stemmed from a 1954 project for an advanced naval fighter. The major production version was the F-4E which was a tactical reconnaissance version, 913 of which were delivered to the USAF between October 1967 and December 1976.
