These are flies meant to float on the water's surface, imitating all sorts of
adult aquatic or terrestrial insects that fall into the water.
Here is a heavily tied fly - more like a bass bug for trout. Usually used in
sizes 12 near shore line cover in lakes. In streams and creeks, use size 12 -
16, fished upstream with the drifts in faster currents.
The places where the fast and slower water meet form an edge, called a
"seam," trout lay waiting for food along those seams. Cast your fly right on
the seam, and let it ride past you before you pick it up and re-cast. If night
fishing is legal in your region, this is the fly to use. Keep wading to a
minimum.

Sure, there are times early in the season when trout sulk on the bottom of the
stream. If they eat anything, it's a worm or a flashy spinner or a weighted
nymph, fished deep and slow.
But trout are mainly insect eaters. They're most vulnerable when they're
gorging on bugs at the surface, as they do at least part of virtually every
day of the season. At those times, anybody with modest skill and a dry fly
that even vaguely resembles the insect the trout are eating can catch them
easily.
