Hallowe’en is coming, and soon the ghosts and goblins will be out in full force! It’s great fun for the kids, but for parents, it can be stressful. We are all concerned for the safety of our children that night, but what about their overall health and well-being? Candies are a real treat, but make sure your children do not go overboard with the sweets. You’ll want to sort through the bag of goodies to check for anything dangerous, then seriously consider what your child will be eating.

If your child is susceptible to colds, flus, or erratic behaviour, you might consider decreasing his or her intake of candy. Sugar actually suppresses the immune system, and has been linked to hyperactivity. An overabundance of sugar in the diet can also set your child up for future weight problems and diabetes. With diabetes in the news recently, this is an even greater concern for many parents. Frequently indulging in candies and sweets (especially at a young age) can create a sweet tooth, and the beginning of a downhill slide.

Make sure your child is properly prepared for the weather conditions. Something warm under their costume is a good idea, to protect against the elements. A warm and dry child is a happy child, with fewer chances of developing a cold afterward. In addition to covering their neck, the kidneys must also be protected. Make sure to cover your child’s back (where the kidneys are situated), to protect your child’s vitality.

Halloween is our confirmation that fall is here, and that winter will be arriving soon. Get your child started early, eating a healthy diet, getting adequate rest and exercise, and having sugar just as an occasional ‘treat’. Your child’s future will be brighter if the basics of health are in place.
