Dark Chocolate
Researchers have found that dark chocoate contains
flavonoids, antioxidants and Phytochemical that fight free radicals- harmfully
reactive molecules that can damate arteries. Flavonoids are commonly found in
fruit and vegetables as well in red wine. Louis Griveti, a University of
California, Davis nutritionist who studies choclate's history, notes that
ancient cultures in Mexico drank choclate for medicinal purposes: to improve
digestion and calm agitation. The ancients were limited to chocolate drinks.
The candy bar wasn't invented until the 1830s, by which time the vanquished
ancients had vanished. Study participants at the University of Davis drank a
cup of hot chocolate made from a special flavonoid-rich cocoa powder. The
flavonoids appeared to temorarily stimulate antioxidant ability, as well as
inhibit blood clot formation (as does aspirin).
