Reiki (pronounced Ray-key)
Japanese word meaning Universal
Life Energy, an energy which is all around us.
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction
and relaxation that also promotes healing. If one's "life force energy" is
low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we
are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki is made of two
Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki
which is "life force energy".
So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life
force energy."
A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing
radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person
including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects
that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Reiki
is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement
that everyone can use. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or
therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
Which conditions can Reiki
help?
It is
possible to heal at any level of being: physical, mental, emotional or
spiritual. Acute injuries can be helped to heal very quickly but more chronic
illness takes longer. In some cases such as terminal illness, there is not
enough time for the progress of the disease to be reversed. Reiki healing can
be given anywhere at any time as no special equipment is needed. The
practitioner is a channel which the energy is drawn through by the need or
imbalance in the recipient. As running water smoothes the jagged edges of a
rock until it is small enough to roll away, Reiki flows to the areas of need,
soothing pain and supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself. Reiki
restores balance in one's life.
Reiki supports all forms of
treatment both orthodox and complementary.
A Reiki Treatment
The
method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is a very simple
process. The recipient simply lies on a couch and relaxes. There is no need to
remove any clothing as Reiki will pass through anything, even plaster casts.
The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively in a sequence of
positions which cover the whole body.
History of Reiki
Reiki
is believed to have begun in Tibet
several thousand years ago. Seers in the Orient studied energies and developed
a system of sounds and symbols for universal healing energies. Various healing
systems, which crossed many different cultures, emerged from this single root
system. Unfortunately, the original source itself was forgotten.
Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese
Christian educator in Kyoto,
Japan,
rediscovered the root system in the mid- to late 1800s. He began an extensive
twenty-one-year study of the healing phenomena of history's greatest spiritual
leaders. He also studied ancient sutras (Buddhist teachings written in
Sanskrit). He discovered ancient sounds and symbols that are linked directly
to the human body and nervous system which activate the universal life energy
for healing. Usui then underwent a metaphysical experience and became
empowered to use these sounds and symbols to heal. He called this form of
healing Reiki and taught it throughout Japan
until his death around 1893.
Reiki was introduced to the
Western world in the mid-1970s.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a
religion. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts
them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having
only an intellectual concept of it. Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki
system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple
ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across
all cultures.
