Barbara Takase - Managing Director - Auckland
English Academy
Hello! I'm Barbara Takase. I'm the Director of the Auckland English Academy. For the past 20 years I've been helping people from all around the world come to study English in Auckland and then go on to academic success.
Following my students’ successful careers is one
of the most satisfying aspects of working at the Auckland English Academy.
What’s the first step towards academic
success in an English-speaking country?
Every university admissions director I’ve
ever met has told me that a solid grounding in English, and the ability
to confidently express oneself in English is the most important
qualification for academic success. So they are particularly interested in the
candidate’s English language record.
In British Commonwealth countries
(U.K., Australia, Canada, New Zealand) the preferred English language
examination for entry is the IELTS (International. English Language
Testing System) examination.
What is the IELTS Examination about?
The IELTS examination is administered by the
University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. There are testing centres in
most cities in the English-speaking countries. The IELTS exam is a comprehensive
examination which covers the four language skills of speaking,
listening, reading and writing.
What happens if I take the IELTS exam and
fail?
You can’t fail the IELTS exam.
You will receive a result for each of the 4 skills – reading, writing,
speaking and listening. The marks are based on a scale of 1 to 10 – 1 being a
low score and 10 a top score. However, universities have set minimum
requirements for each of the 4 skills, depending on the type of course you
will apply for. For example, for a diploma in accountancy, the required entry
level might be 5.5. But for a language-intense subject such as teaching, the
entry level might be higher – 7 or 7.5.
What can I do to obtain the highest
possible score?
Start with a thorough examination
preparation English course. The Auckland English Academy’s IELTS
preparation course has a 20-year track record of success.
How does that work?
Here’s how we do it: ·
-
By improving your reading, writing, listening
and speaking skills in Academic Engli
-
By improving your English language proficiency,
especially in the fields of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
-
By giving you strategies for study and
independent learning outside the classroom.
-
By enabling you to score well on the IELTS
examination.
-
By exposing you to the content areas of
business, technology and global issues.
-
By familiarizing you with university processes
and systems.
-
By promoting automatic English.
How often is the IELTS examination
offered?
The examination is held in Auckland every
second Saturday – so there are lots of dates to choose from.
When do the IELTS preparation courses
start?
You can join an IELTS course at the Auckland
English Academy on any Monday throughout the year.
